Urbana University, located in Urbana, Ohio, is seeking a full-time (12-month) Assistant Professor, Chemistry. The faculty is responsible for the coordination, planning, preparation, presentation, and evaluation of classroom instruction and related activities. This position will be responsible for setting up and running a chemistry laboratory including all laboratory preparation and associated chemical safety, certifications, and maintenance of chemistry equipment.  The Assistant Professor is responsible for performing duties during the day, evening, or weekend as assigned. Additional related activities include holding office hours, advising students, participating in student visit days and orientation sessions, and serving on faculty committees. An instructor performs all other duties as directed by the College Dean and/or the Department Chair.


  • Master’s degree in Chemistry or related inorganic or organic area required (Ph.D. preferred)
  • If the Master’s degree is in another field, you must have completed at least 18 hours of graduate level coursework in inorganic and organic chemistry, or closely related courses
  • Must have daytime availability
  • Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated experience utilizing specialized chemical analysis equipment including GC/MS or AA Spectrometry and software familiarity (e.g., MassHunter)

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teach introductory inorganic, organic, and biochemistry courses and additional physical chemistry courses with laboratories as well as upper-division courses in area of specialization;
  • Willingness to remain current in the field;
  • Ensure that course outcomes are assessed in a manner that aligns to the nature of the outcome;
  • Ensure that course outcomes and assessments align to appropriate specialized program area standards;
  • Develop course syllabi utilizing approved course outcomes;
  • Provide students and the Department of Education with a copy of the syllabus used for each semester;
  • Learn and utilize the approved LMS as a part of the UU commitment to maintaining course consistency and strong student/instructor communication;
  • Required to teach a minimum of 30 semester hours per academic year unless a course reduction has been approved by the College Dean and/or Department Chair;
  • Maintain accurate and complete scholastic records, including attendance records utilize the approved LMS and other forms required by the registrar’s office;
  • Submit early warning and requested documents when appropriate as required by the UU focus on attracting, enrolling, retaining, and graduating students;
  • Conduct class evaluations and complete other college evaluations in accordance with college policy;
  • Ensure that assigned classes are held as scheduled;
  • Hold the final exam at the time scheduled in the University’s semester schedule, unless permission to deviate has been approved by the College Dean and/or the Department Chair
  • Participate in course, program, and curriculum review and development;
  • Serve on University, college, and departmental committees
  • Keep informed of current trends and new approaches to instruction through professional development activities;
  • Assist in the recruitment and retention of students;
  • Post and maintain office hours for student consultation;
  • Attend all University faculty meetings, the faculty advance, and other meetings when asked;
  • Be thoroughly familiar with the Faculty Handbook and the University Catalog;
  • Become thoroughly familiar with all University and departmental policies and procedures and comply with all of them;
  • Strive for the qualities delineated in the criteria for faculty evaluation used by the University.
