Urbana, OH (June 23, 2017)
Urbana University is proud to announce that the Johnny Appleseed Museum will once again be featured as a stop on this year’s 25th Annual Champaign County Preservation Alliance Historic Home and Garden Tour, held June 24-25.
Located on the campus of Urbana University, a proud member of the Urbana community, the Johnny Appleseed Education Center and Museum honors one of the area’s most iconic figures in history. The Museum houses numerous artifacts such as wood and bark from original trees planted by Johnny Appleseed; photos of monuments and markers dedicated to Johnny Appleseed; and numerous publications about the life and legend of Johnny Appleseed.
Home and Garden Tour guests will hear from Johnny Appleseed himself (reenactments by Urbana University students). In addition, Ann Corfman, retired Urbana University professor, author, Johnny Appleseed Society member and Johnny Appleseed Education Center and Museum volunteer, will be on site both days to sign several of her children’s books written about Johnny Appleseed.
About the Johnny Appleseed Educational Center and Museum
Located on the campus of Urbana University in Urbana, Ohio, the Johnny Appleseed Educational Center and Museum was founded in 1996 by members of the Urbana University faculty and staff. These founding members realized John Chapman, better known as Johnny Appleseed, had been friends with the founders of the University and wanted to preserve the history of the relationship. The museum holds the largest collection of memorabilia and written information about the life of John "Appleseed" Chapman in the world. Complete with a computer research database, family history and National Registry of Johnny Appleseed’s relatives, the museum is a wealth of history and a lot of fun.
In 1999, seedlings from the last known surviving apple tree planted by Johnny Appleseed were transplanted in the courtyard around the museum. The trees are testimony to Johnny Appleseed's everlasting contributions to agricultural stewardship.
