11/8 Update Regarding Nov. 6 Incident

Sherry Mercurio
Executive Director, Office of Community Relations

Urbana, OH (November 8, 2018)

Urbana University announces that the Urbana Police Department has made arrests related to the incident that occurred on campus Tuesday afternoon. As an active investigation, specific details related to Tuesday’s incident are still considered confidential and therefore cannot be shared with the public to protect the integrity of prosecution efforts.  These details include any relationship those arrested hold to campus. Information that has been released publicly by police regarding today’s arrest has been included below.

With arrests made, the judicial system will now follow due process and work to prosecute these individuals.  Once the judicial process has been completed, Urbana University will conduct a Community standards: Student Code of conduct review to determine the status of any individuals who may have a relationship to campus. In the meantime, Safety and Security continues to work with investigators to provide support, including providing additional campus camera footage to aid their investigative efforts.

As part of leadership’s response to Tuesday’s incident, a number of security enhancements have been approved that continue to prioritize the safety and security of our campus community.  These measures include approving the hiring of additional residence hall staff to help provide oversight within the campus’ three residential halls and improvements to the OneCallNow emergency alert system.  In addition, the Office of Safety and Security have approved the hiring of additional personnel to enhance on-campus patrols. These efforts will help augment existing safety measures which include nearly 100 cameras to watch over public and open spaces; the OneCallNow emergency notification system that provides for email, text or call notifications; a dedicated Office of Safety and Security which operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; newly installed Blue Lights; Security Bike Patrol; annual tabletop emergency response exercise; and residence hall safety upgrades which include keycard access to the building and hallway or wings, and hard-keys to individual rooms.

We will continue to work with the authorities not only to ensure the prosecution of all parties involved in Tuesday’s incident, but also to maintain a safe campus community.

We thank our campus community for their continued cooperation as we work through Tuesday’s unfortunate incident.
