Urbana University, a branch campus of Franklin University will host a ribbon cutting ceremony at 12:15 p.m. on Oct. 6, as part of this year’s “U-Knighted” Homecoming celebration.

The first large-scale physical addition to campus in more than a decade, the athletic facility provides Urbana University’s new wrestling program with a dedicated practice facility, and features a practice room equipped with wall-to-wall mats, a weight room, and locker rooms.

Efforts to build the new athletic facility began with a December ground breaking that were launched through the support of a number of generous alumni who have generously contributed to the building effort.  As part of the alumni support, the Lester Baum and newly added Bob Cawley campaign were launched, helping to continue Urbana University’s impact on the region, and beyond!

As part of the Oct. 6 celebration, the following guests will offer their thoughts on the impact of the new facility: Dr. David Decker, President of Franklin University; Dr. Christopher Washington, Executive Vice President, Urbana University; Larry Cox, Executive Director of Athletics, Urbana University, and Bill Bean, Mayor of the City of Urbana and Urbana University alumnae.  A number of special guests will also be in attendance including Urbana University donors whose financial contributions helped build the new athletic facility, community leaders, and regional athletic administrators.

"Providing robust athletic offerings and facilities impacts student athletes’ educational experience. It provides an improved environment for them to learn the values of healthy competition, teamwork, goal setting, respect and hard work,” said Dr. Christopher Washington. “Through these values, Urbana students develop as individuals, students, teammates, and contributing members of the community.”

The new athletic facility is the latest addition in a number of recent Improvements made to Urbana University’s offerings.  Notable campus additions include the introduction of acrobatics & tumbling, men’s’ volleyball and wrestling; academic offerings in the area of STEM programs and Cybersecurity; and physical improvements such as the installation of permanent lights and a new drainage system to the stadium, a resurfaced basketball court floor, renovation of the Dining Commons, and numerous other improvement to the campus  grounds.

"Our new athletic facility continues the sense of momentum on campus and in our athletic programs," said Larry Cox. “Providing dedicated athletic facilities not only demonstrates our investment in our student-athletes and their individual development, it also helps attract the caliber of student athlete that will continue the elevation of the reputation of Blue Knights athletics within the Mountain East which is one of the premier NCAA Division II conferences in the nation.”
