Derrick Blyberg Named Assistant Athletic Director for Athletic Communications

The Urbana University Department of Athletics announced the promotion of Derrick Blyberg from Sports Information Director to Assistant Athletic Director for Athletic Communications.

A key component of the Urbana University Blue Knight athletics programs, Blyberg oversees all facets of both traditional and emerging SID duties, and is the primary media contact for the athletic department. In his role, he participates on the institution's Athletic Committee and serves as a voting member of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Regional Poll.

“I am extremely pleased to announce a new title promotion for Derrick”, said Larry Cox, Executive Director of Athletics.  “In a short time here at Urbana, he has done a tremendous job of raising the professional standards of the position. Our brand messaging and social media awareness has increased exponentially and he has made a positive impression within the athletic department, our campus community and the Mountain East Conference.  No one works harder at his craft then Derrick and he is very deserving of this honor.”

In only his third year at Urbana University, Blyberg has led major improvements to external branding efforts and overall operations of the department. He spearheaded the launch of the newly created athletic website,, improved live-event streaming while generating revenue, implemented the creation of award-winning sport schedule posters, brought live stats to volleyball, baseball and softball, and revamped the Blue Knights' social media presence with the creation of official Twitter and Instagram accounts.

Before joining Urbana University, Blyberg served as Athletic Communications Assistant at Middle Tennessee State University, and as the Athletic Communications Intern at the University of Toledo where he was the primary contact for softball, tennis, cross country, track and swimming, and served as host SID for the Ohio High School Athletic Association postseason boys' basketball tournament games played at Savage Arena.

A native of Liberty Township, Ohio, Blyberg graduated from Taylor University in 2012 with a degree in sport management.
