Peer Tutor

Position Summary:

  • Must be a current student position starts August 19
  • Provide face-to-face academic support to undergraduate students
  • Complete other tasks as designated by supervisor

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Tutor students who request help with subjects in which tutor is proficient
  • Teach students who seek help to develop/improve general study skills
  • Treat students with patience, understanding, respect, and encouragement
  • Provide individual and small group tutoring for students in specified subject areas.
  • Follow the Learning Commons guidelines, which includes employing active learning strategies that promote students to be independent learners.
  • Be open to working with the diverse student body of Urbana University.
  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development.
  • Maintain confidentiality with regard to academic progress and/or personal information concerning students
  • Conducts classroom visits to promote academic support services
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of each tutoring session

Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Peer tutors must submit a recommendation form from a faculty member before they begin tutoring
  • Solid knowledge of subject matter and writing skills
  • Ability to work with others with demonstrated ability to communicate efficiently

  • Works well with limited direction during shift
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Good organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to provide constructive criticism and helpful feedback
  • Displays understanding and patience

Additional Notes:

  • Tutoring Center is open Monday through Thursday 8am to 8 pm, and Fridays 8am to 4:00 pm
  • Tutoring will be assigned according to student demand and tutor availability
  • Background check required
  • Become College Reading and Learning certified as a professional tutor
