Campus Security Officer

Urbana University, a branch campus of Franklin University, has an opening for a Campus Security Officer who will promote lawful behavior, and assist with the protection of life, property, and the prevention of crime.  Reporting to the Security Manager, he/she will render aid and service to faculty, staff, students and visitors as an armed uniformed presence on campus and will perform foot and vehicle patrols of the University campus to monitor behavior, secure buildings and property, investigate disturbances, maintain order during events and enforce regulations.  He/she will also monitor the physical safety of campus buildings by locking and unlocking doors, patrolling or monitoring using surveillance systems, and reporting suspicious behavior.  Campus Safety and Security Services is a 24/7 department and overtime hours will be expected.  Primary work hours for this position will be Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 12:00 pm-10:00 pm.  

Duties and Responsibilities:

•    Reporting to Campus Safety and Security Office at the scheduled start time and obtaining pass-on information from on-duty personnel
•    Providing foot patrol and/or vehicle patrol of all University grounds and buildings
•    Responding to emergency situations and providing first aid, and alerting additional police or emergency personnel, as appropriate 
•    Documenting information, completing written reports and filing with the appropriate University officials, as required
•    Working closely with the Residence Life staff and the Executive Director of Student Affairs regarding any student issues
•    Conducting periodic walk through of all campus buildings
•    Checking buildings, offices and grounds to ensure security of University assets
•    Providing student and employee safety escorts and assisting stranded motorists
•    Operating the University Safety and Security vehicles, battery-operated carts, or security bikes (if trained) in a safe manner while patrolling campus grounds
•    Maintaining radio communication with other safety personnel
•    Monitoring CCTV and alarm systems and responding to alerts
•    Serving as crowd control at special events
•    Locking and unlocking campus buildings and offices, as necessary
•    Maintaining security controls for University keys; safeguarding issued university equipment
•    Watching for and reporting irregularities, such as security breaches, facility and safety hazards, and emergency situations
•    Remaining alert for the presence of unauthorized persons and/or security code violators, approaching suspicious persons and/or notifying police, as appropriate
•    Other duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:

•    High School Diploma or GED
•    Ability to stay calm in stressful or emergency situations
•    Effective oral and written communication skills 
•    Physical ability to walk University grounds and stand for prolonged periods of time
•    Ability to maintain the authorization to carry a firearm, while on duty
•    Ability to work with others in a team atmosphere
•    Ability to read and understand University rules, regulations and specific general orders applying to Campus Safety
•    Ability to work weekends, nights to include overnight and holidays
•    Ability to work overtime for athletic or other special events
•    Unquestionable honesty and integrity
•    Outstanding interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity and problem solving skills 
•    Valid Ohio driver’s license

Preferred Skills and Characteristics:

•    CPR, First-Aid, AED Training/Certification 
•    Prior law enforcement / security experience or training is strongly preferred
•    Firearms certification and/or training
•    IPMBA certification

Additional Notes:
