2007 Student Awards Presented During Honors Convocation
Chemistry Award
Urbana University student Lori James of Cable received an award for outstanding academic achievement in chemistry.
The Chemical Rubber Company’s Freshman Chemistry Achievement Award was presented to Miss James for her achievements in Chemistry I and II.
She received the award during Honors Convocation held during Spring Semester on the University campus. She was presented with a certificate and her name will be engraved on a plaque that hangs in the Lewis and Jean Moore Center for Mathematics and Science.
Communications Award
Urbana University alumnus Shaun Dunlap of Cable was named the recipient of the Communications Award by the College of Arts and Sciences.
A member of the Urbana University Class of 2006, Mr. Dunlap graduated in December with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Arts.
Student awards were announced during Honors Convocation held during Spring Semester in the Warren G. Grimes Center.
English Award
Urbana University alumna Dawn Luthman of Russia was named the recipient of the 2007 English Award by the University’s College of Arts and Sciences.
A member of the Class of 2007, Ms. Luthman graduated summa cum laude, which is highest honors, with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
Student awards were presented during Honors Convocation held during Spring Semester in the Warren G. Grimes Center.
History Award
Urbana University student Mike Thornton of Urbana was named the recipient of the 2007 Outstanding History Student Award by the University’s College of Arts and Sciences.
The award was announced by Steven Cooley, Ph.D., Professor of History and Religion, during Honors Convocation held in the Warren G. Grimes Center.
A History major, Mr. Thornton gained firsthand experience in aircraft restoration through an internship assisting in the restoration of a vintage World War II-era B-17 Flying Fortress.
He did the work as part of the opportunity for field experience that will count toward requirements for graduation. At Urbana University, field experience is an internship designed to give a student an understanding of what type of work that can be expected in his or her area of academic concentration or career interest.
Nursing Student Awards
Two students from Springfield have received honors for outstanding academic achievement in nursing education through Community Hospital School of Nursing and Urbana University.
The Outstanding Bachelor of Science in Nursing Student Award was presented to Lucille Robinson of Springfield. She received the Urbana University nursing pin at a ceremony May 13 in the Urbana University Student Center. Mrs. Robinson graduated May 12 from Urbana University with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
Julie Hardy, also of Springfield, received the Outstanding Nursing Student Award from Community Hospital School of Nursing. The school’s faculty selects the student for the award who has demonstrated high academic achievement, leadership ability, passion and enthusiasm for nursing, kindness and compassion toward patients, and exemplifies the nursing profession.
Richard K. Anderson Student Services Award, Athletic Training
An Urbana University student from Tipp City received awards for outstanding academic achievement and for his involvement in the University community.
Christopher Loubier received the Richard K. Anderson Student Services Award and was named Outstanding Health and Sports Studies student for the 2006-07 academic year.
Mr. Loubier, who graduated from Urbana University after Spring Semester with a Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training, was active on the University campus. President of the Sports Medicine Association, he was a member of the Residence Life staff for three years. He served as Student Ambassador, was instrumental in launching the annual Sports Medicine Association 5K Run/Walk and worked to reopen the Grimes Center pool to the University community. He has been active in the Student Government Association, Student Activities Committee and Colleges Against Cancer.
The award is named for Richard K. Anderson who retired from the faculty of Urbana University in 1998 after many years of dedicated service. The award was started in recognition of his dedication to the University and its students.
The names of award recipients are inscribed on a plaque that hangs in the lobby of the Office of Student Services at Urbana University.
Vernon A.C. Lestrud Award for Theatre, Humanities
Urbana University student Megan Johnson of Cable received awards at Honors Convocation held during Spring Semester on the University campus. She is a junior majoring in English.
She was named the recipients of the Vernon A.C. Lestrud Award for Theatre. Ms. Johnson has been active in the Urbana University Theatre Department. She had a lead role in the Fall 2006 production of “A Canterville Ghost” and produced this Spring Semester’s comedy titled “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged).” She also directed a student production which was performed on campus April 13.
Ms. Johnson also is the recipient of the Humanities Award, which is awarded annually to the student who champions the liberal arts through active leadership in promoting the humanities on campus.
