When it comes to making connections and building bridges, Boy Scout Troop 316’s Dale Evans is off and soaring with his Eagle project. The 14-year-old had visited the Urbana University campus several times and when he learned that there was a need for a building project Dale was set for the task. “My eagle project was building a bridge across what seemed to me at the time, a small trench” remarked Evans after first visiting the site. However, after visiting on a later date he discovered that this small trench “turned into a mud bath when it rained.” In fact, the small bridge would soon connect the Urbana University campus to Williams Hall, current location of the president’s office.
On Saturday, April 5 th Dale led and completed the last stages of his Eagle Scout Project which is the culmination leadership requirement for the highest rank to be awarded to a Scout, the rank of Eagle. “The Eagle rank means that I will have more of an influence in the teaching of the younger scouts in our troop. I already do my best to pass on my knowledge of scouting but know I will be able to pass on my leadership experience.” His Eagle project involved planning, assembling, and installing a twelve foot bridge as well as working with adults and other scouts in completing a gravel walking trail. “I learned a lot, especially how to deal with adults and how to keep everyone busy.” Dale has held various positions of leadership in scouting such as Patrol Leader, OA representative, and Scribe. Dale and his family are originally from England which is the birthplace of the Scouting movement.
