Alpha Sigma Lambda is the premier national honor society
for nontraditional/adult undergraduate students. It's mission is to recognize
and foster scholarship and leadership among adult/nontraditional students. Urbana
University's chapter of Alpha Sigma Lambda operates strictly as an honorary
with no officers or annual meetings. Honorary membership is awarded to faculty
and staff involved in Urbana's programs which enroll adult learners. The
first induction ceremony was held in 2000.
An annual induction ceremony is held during the spring
semester. Students are tapped for membership and are sent letters of invitation
to join Alpha Sigma Lambda. There is a membership fee. To qualify, the student
must be at 25 years of age or older, must be matriculated and have a minimum
of twenty-four graded semesters hours from UU, at least twelve of the student's
total credits should be earned in Liberal Arts/Sciences. Members are selected
only from the highest ten percent of the class who have meet the above qualifications.
During its first two induction ceremonies, all inductees have maintained
a 4.0 GPA.
Certificates, pins and cords are provided to members. Cords
can be worn at commencement.
