Welcome to Urbana University!

Dr. Robert L. Head,
President of Urbana University

I hope you find this introduction to our University through our web site both informative and enjoyable.

Since our founding in 1850, Urbana University has been committed to preparing students for the challenges of an ever-changing world. In these early years of the new millennium, that commitment is even more essential. Our vision continues to focus Urbana University on excellence, leadership, and service. The liberal arts education offered at Urbana University provides students with the practical skills they will need to succeed in a competitive job market, and an appreciation for the values they will need to become the leaders of tomorrow.

It is said that through books, young children learn to fly. Through the love for new knowledge instilled at Urbana University, our students learn to soar.

A 16:1 student-faculty ratio provides Urbana University students with the chance to receive the individual attention that is often so crucial to academic success. Under the guidance of qualified instructors and assistance from a caring staff, Urbana University nurtures our students from the first day of classes their freshman year to receiving their diploma. Urbana University graduates have gone on to become doctors, lawyers, teachers, social service providers and business leaders. Each of our graduates, regardless of their chosen career path, can credit their experiences at Urbana University as being critical to their success.

At Urbana University, we know that a quality education goes beyond what is learned in the classroom. In that spirit, we provide students the opportunity to make a positive contribution to society. Through our Service Learning program, students help area families in need, assist at public events, tutor young students, and volunteer to help provide critical human needs in the community. Students involved in Service Learning gain further understanding and a broader appreciation of their course content, and an enhanced sense of civic responsibility. During the fall of 2002 alone, Urbana University students were involved in 24 community service projects. Nearly 500 students, faculty and staff devoted a combined 2,500 hours to helping communities in the surrounding area.

Urbana University also believes that the values instilled through involvement in extracurricular activities are important to an individual's growth. Our students have the opportunity to take part in athletic performing arts and student organizations. A great number of our residential students are involved in one athletic program or another. Each of these students finds that the values of teamwork and of striving toward excellence on the field of play are a natural extension of the educational process. There also are opportunities for students whose interests and talents are in the performing arts. Our choir, the University Singers, and our theater group, the University Players, schedule public performances each semester. Urbana University's band, The Royal Blues, performs at athletic events and other special occasions. The University has a wide array of campus organizations that students may join. Involvement in Student Government or any of the other 26 organizations and honor societies helps our students develop the skills they will need to take leadership roles in their communities after graduation.

Urbana University is located on a beautiful 128 acres in the west central Ohio community of Urbana. Just 10 miles north of Interstate 70, it is an easy drive to our campus. We provide a safe and secure environment for our residential students, as well as for those who choose to commute to our campus. Also, the University is within an hour's drive to the metropolitan areas of Columbus and Dayton, enabling students to have ready access to world-class cultural attractions, first-rate theater, professional sports and outstanding restaurants and shopping.

So, enjoy your visit to Urbana University through cyberspace. Better yet, visit our campus in person. You will find an institution of higher learning that is dedicated to making a quality educational experience available and meaningful, to helping students achieve their personal and professional goals. It is what we are dedicated to doing well at Urbana University.
