Foundation Center Funding Workshops at Urbana University

The Foundation Center Funding Information Network located at Urbana University will host two free workshops, “Grant Proposal Writing Basics” and “Introduction to Finding Funders”, for nonprofit organizations and interested individuals on Thursdays, May 15 and May 22 at 1 p.m.  “Grant Proposal Writing Basics” will be offered on Thursday, May 15 from 1 to 3 p.m., while “Introduction to Finding Funders” will be offered Thursday, May 2 from 1 – 2:30 p.m.  Participants are welcome to attend either session or both sessions.  The workshop will be led by Funding Information Network Supervisor Julie McDaniel and held in the Urbana University Swedenborg Memorial Library. Reservations for the workshops are required and can be made by calling 484-1409.

The “Grant Proposal Writing Basics” workshop will help grant seekers learn the key components of a proposal to a foundation.  Participants will learn about preparing to write the proposal as well as how to organize, write and package the proposal.  The workshop will also cover important aspects about communicating with potential donors during the proposal preparation period and follow up.

During the “Introduction to Finding Funders” workshop participants will be introduced to The Foundation Directory Online, the Foundation Center’s top-tier searchable database providing information on more than 100,000 grant makers and more than a million grant records.  Participants will learn how to create customized searches to develop targeted lists of foundations that will match their organization's funding needs; search grants made by top funders; maximize search results with insider tips and strategies for mining the database. During the workshop participants will have an opportunity to practice their own searches of the database and may bring a flash drive to download information found in the Directory.

The Foundation Center is a national nonprofit service organization serving as a leading authority on organized philanthropy, connecting nonprofits and the grant makers supporting them to tools they can use and information they can trust.  As a Funding Information Network member, Urbana University makes the resources of the Foundation Center available to area residents.
