Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address Program at Urbana University

URBANA, Ohio (November 15, 2013) – On November 19, 1863, after a long, masterful address by the noted orator Edward Everett, President Abraham Lincoln rose to make “a few appropriate remarks” at the dedication of the national cemetery at Gettysburg. In less than three minutes he had finished, too quickly for photographers to capture his image as he spoke. What he said during that short speech has become one of the most iconic pieces of oratory in American history.

This year marks the 150th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, and in celebration of the landmark speech, Urbana University will host a Brown Bag lecture, “Lincoln at Gettysburg: Reflections on the Man and the Speech,” to be delivered by Dr. J. Michael Rhyne. The lecture will be from 12 – 1:00 p.m. on Monday, November 25, in the Moore Conference Room on the lower level of the Student Center. Feel free to bring a bag lunch or to purchase lunch from the White Family Grill in the Student Center.

Dr. Rhyne will discuss how and why Lincoln came to be at Gettysburg 150 years ago; why he was not the keynote speaker; and why, at first, Lincoln thought his little speech a flop. He will explore the language of the speech, as well as its historical context and legacy, making the argument that, even as historians have examined and re-examined the speech over the generations, each new generation of Americans must strive to live up to its challenge.

Dr. Rhyne is an associate professor of history at Urbana University. He received his PhD from the University of Cincinnati and is a nationally recognized scholar on the Civil War era and the process of emancipation in the United States. This lecture is part of the ongoing Brown Bag Lecture Series presented by the College of Social & Behavioral Sciences.
