UU Colleges Against Cancer to sponsor Relay for Life
URBANA, Ohio (April 8, 2013) – For the ninth year, Urbana University’s Colleges Against Cancer student organization will host a RELAY FOR LIFE on Friday, April 12 from 4:00 p.m. to midnight to raise money for the Champaign County Relay for the American Cancer Society. The RELAY kicks off in front of the UU Student Center with a Survivor Lap around the quad. Any survivor, family members, and friends are invited to participate in this opening lap. Following the Survivor Lap, the Team Laps will begin.
Throughout the afternoon and evening, a variety of spirit games and activities will help to encourage the walkers. At 7 p.m., the Knights of Praise Bands will perform. A special “Bumbalough’s Bonusland” game of math trivia and wacky facts will begin at 10:30 p.m., in tribute to Kathy Bumbalough, a UU faculty member who recently died.
The public is invited and encouraged to come and participate in all of the RELAY FOR LIFE activities sponsored by faculty, staff, and student teams. There will be music, games, contests, food, and beverages. At 10 p.m. a Pinwheel Remembrance Garden will be “planted” in the campus quad to remember those lost to cancer, support those fighting cancer, and rejoice with those who have fought the disease and won! Each Pinwheel is a minimum $5 donation to the American Cancer Society. One need not be present for the Pinwheel Ceremony; all Pinwheels purchased will list a loved one’s name and be “planted”. Pinwheels may be purchased throughout the Relay.
The weather may not be perfect, but it will remind us all that those who have been affected by cancer have had to endure so much more.
