Kathy Bumbalough, Beloved UU Professor
URBANA, Ohio (March 25, 2013) - Urbana University lost a beloved colleague, educator, and friend this past Thursday, March 21, 2013. Assistant professor, Kathy Bumbalough, passed away at home after a short but courageous battle with cancer surrounded by her loving family. She requested that her visitation and funeral be held at the University. The Bumbalough family will receive visitors in the University Student Center Sara Landess Room on Tuesday, March 26, from 3:00 - 8:00 p.m. Kathy Bumbalough’s funeral service will be held in the Warren G. Grimes Center Gymnasium from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 27, with Minister Colin True officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, West Liberty. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Urbana University for a scholarship in memory of Kathy Bumbalough. Gifts should be made payable to Urbana University, 579 College Way, Urbana, OH 430078 and marked: Kathryn Bumbalough Scholarship.
She was born August 10, 1958, in Clark County, a daughter of Thomas Griffin, of Utah, and Marilyn Curl Knorr and Emil Knorr. On April 2, 1982 she married the love of her life, Lee Allen Bumbalough.
A Christian first, Kathy’s values and joy for life were reflected in those she taught. Many lives were touched by her, including children at the Church of Christ and students from Springfield South, Urbana University and various tutoring sessions. She attained her Bachelor of Arts in mathematics in 1980 from Wittenberg University and her Master of Education in Classroom Teaching in 2000 from Urbana University. At the time of her passing, Kathy was an Assistant Professor of Education at Urbana University.
Kathy was also a loving housewife, nurturing mother and faithful member of the Urbana Church of Christ. She enjoyed baking, spending time outdoors and being healthy and active.
As one of the most loved educators at UU, she began her career as an instructor in 1998 and was promoted to assistant professor in 2004. She was a great supporter of all Blue Knights teams and the students. Kathy was a co-advisor for the Lambda Sigma national honor society for second year students. For two years, she was selected Homecoming Queen by the students.
She is survived by her husband, Lee; her parents; her children, Tyler (Lyndsay) Bumbalough of Urbana and Heather Bumbalough of West Liberty. She is also survived by Matthew (Rachael) Lesko, Indiana; two brothers Charles Griffin, Oklahoma, and Fred (Sue) Knorr; two sisters, Louisa (Brett) Schaffer,Colorado, and Susan Knorr. She had 5 nieces and 13 nephews. She is preceded in death by her step-sister, Kimberly Knorr.
