Urbana University’s Men’s Bowling Team Ranked Twelfth in the Nation
by Courtney Elliott, UU freshman
URBANA, Ohio (February 12, 2013) - A typical collegiate bowler can average a 200, but the Urbana University men’s varsity bowling team is scoring above and beyond. The UU men’s team has put it all together when it counts, bringing home numerous team trophies and individual honors.
They began the season in early October with a 2nd place finish in the University of Northwestern’s Ohio Racer’s Classic. Earning a 1st place for the entire tournament, averaging a score of 241 and making all tournament, was sophomore Brock Finch. Following not too far behind Brock was freshman Kyle Mayberry, averaging a 231.
The team then traveled in late October to the Orange and Black Classic in Dayton, Ohio where they had a top ten finish. Another 2nd place finish came home with the Blue Knights following the Raider Classic in Dayton in the month of November. The team had another successful tournament later in November when they traveled to Fairview, Illinois for the National collegiate Team Match Games. They again finished in the top ten.
Finishing in 11th place in the Collegiate Shoot-Out in Las Vegas, Nevada was an accomplishment, but turning around and earning a 7th place in the Glenn Carlson Las Vegas Invitational was a bit more rewarding for these young men.
At the Bearcat Hoinke classic in Cincinnati, the hometown of two of the team members, the Blue Knights finished 3rd. A few days later, they loaded the busses and headed to South Bend, Indiana to compete in the Blue and Gold Classic. Again the team finished in the top ten. Currently, the UU Blue Knights Men’s Varsity team is ranked 12th in the nation for collegiate bowling; a huge accomplishment. In the sport of competitive bowling, teams do not compete against colleges and universities of comparable size; rather, they compete against teams from all schools. Some larger schools ranked below UU are Florida State University #20, Arizona State University #24, and Wright State University #32.
Head coach Allen Ryan looks to keep the trend going and is proud of the team members and this club sport program. Team members include freshmen Kyle Mayberry and Dustin Johnson, sophomores Brock Finch and Graham Fach, juniors James Tucker and Andrew Allen, and senior Cory West. The team recently took on a new member, freshman Trent Knoop, to build their depth. Knoop began on the University’s B team, but improved his talent to earn a spot on the A team.
Although teamwork is valued, there are many individual achievements to recognize. Most notably, Graham Fach is ranked 9th in the entire nation, receiving All-American nods. Fellow teammate Brock Finch is ranked 33rd and Andrew Allen is 79th amongst all collegiate bowlers.
The team looks forward to the five tournaments remaining in the season, hoping for some well-earned wins and the possibility of making it into the nation’s Top 10!
