A New Approach to First-Year Student Housing
The Office of Campus Life is introducing a new approach to first-year student housing at Urbana University. As part of the student-centered experience at Urbana University, the office is asking first-time UU students to select a theme for their residential experience. The housing theme will allow the Campus Life and Resident Assistant staff to create a more engaged and active residential community, while allowing students to have a better connection with their residence hall neighbors. Resident Assistants will be hired and placed based on their ability to work with a certain community and population. The RA staff will be asked to partner with faculty and staff to create programming around their theme. By involving university faculty inside the residence halls, Urbana is committed to developing a total living/learning community.
Participation in theme communities offers multiple benefits such as encouraging students in their academic and social endeavors. Residence Hall staff in each themed wing will be dedicated to promoting the ideals of that community. Initially, the themed communities will be in Sycamore and Hazard Halls with the hopes of expanding to McConnell Hall after the first year. Students will select their theme when completing their housing application through the admissions process. If students have ideas on other themed communities while at Urbana, the Campus Life staff is eager to work with them to put their ideas in motion!
“The goal of this program is to create a more engaged, involved, and excited residence life program at Urbana” states director of campus life Mitch Joseph, ’08. “This has been a successful program at numerous other small universities across Ohio and the US, so it makes perfect sense for us to implement this type of program at UU and I am excited to see how these communities will develop.”
Themes for 2013/2014 are:
Blue Knight Pride!
The Blue Knight Pride wing is for students who have a variety of interests, and want to experience the breadth of what UU has to offer. Students in the Blue Knight Pride wing will engage in spirited activities, and show off their Blue Knight Pride! Students will meet others with a variety of interests and lifestyles, and have the opportunity to develop relationships with a diverse population.
Leaders at the U
The Leaders at the U wing is a community in which students focus on exploring leadership opportunities on campus and in the community. Students live together and plan and participate in programming that discovers their leadership potential. These students set their own community standards in regards to quiet hours and study habits. These students create a community of engaged, academically focused students.
Wellness in Action
Beyond embracing a lifestyle free of alcohol, tobacco and illegal drugs, members of the Wellness in Action wing are expected to assist the resident assistant in exploring program options that explore the six dimensions of a wellness model, which include social, intellectual, occupational, spiritual, physical and emotional well-being. In addition, residents may also attend on-campus activities such as lectures, workshops, and cultural offerings.
