Former UU Professor Publishes Book on Johnny Appleseed

Book-signing during Barn Quilt Tour

A New Book Published by the Johnny Appleseed Society URBANA, Ohio (September 28, 2012) - A brand new book, Appleseed Values, was recently published by the Johnny Appleseed Society at Urbana University. This latest book about Johnny Appleseed is a children’s book for ages 7-9 written by Ann Corfman and Nancy Sherwood, and illustrated by Deborah Ullery. The book highlights the values John (Appleseed) Chapman displayed while living here on earth. These same values are still important to emulate today.

This is the second book written by Ann Corfman; her first, A is for Appleseed, published in 2006, was a smashing success. Mrs. Corfman retired this past spring after teaching at Urbana University for sixteen years. Prior to joining the University faculty, she taught grades fourth through eighth for thirty years in the public school system.

Nancy Sherwood is a retired second grade teacher from the Northwestern School District in Clark County, Ohio. As a teacher and librarian, she always included a lesson about Johnny Appleseed in her curriculum.

Deborah Ullery, the illustrator, is a graphic designer from Christiansburg, Ohio. Her intention was to depict the reality of Johnny Appleseed by using photographs of Volks’ Apple Orchard and Charleston Falls and combining these with colored pencil drawings to create truly original illustrations. This is her first book.

Both Appleseed Values and A is for Appleseed can be purchased at the Johnny Appleseed Education Center and Museum located on the campus of Urbana University. Mrs. Corfman will be signing her new book at the Museum during the Champaign County Barn Quilt Tour on Saturday, October 13, from 10 a.m. to noon, and on Sunday, October 14, from noon to 3 p.m.
