College of Education and Sports Studies Hosts Appreciation Banquet
May 9, 2012
The College of Education and Sports Studies hosted a Student Teacher Appreciation banquet last week to recognize the efforts of post-baccalaureate students and students completing student teaching credits, and to show appreciation to the teaching mentors. The evening program began with a welcome from President Stephen Jones and was facilitated by faculty member Dean Pond. Students were then given an opportunity to share anecdotes from the classroom and gratitude for the guidance they received. Director of Alumni Relations, Kat Steiner, concluded the program by welcoming the graduating education majors into the role of an Urbana University alumnus.
“The evening is another wonderful opportunity to market the excellent students of the University and highlight the mission of our institution. It shows how Urbana emphasizes the individual; I think you’ll find that each one of our student teachers enjoyed the personalized attention because it allowed them to grow in the classroom,” stated Dean Pond.
For Erin Beam ’12, it was her last required class; working with a teaching mentor furthered her confidence in the classroom. She shared, “Student teaching was a great experience. My cooperating teachers were amazing! It was valuable because getting to teach for a whole semester really gave me a taste of what teaching is all about with the guidance of exceptional educators.”
Cooperating teacher Jody Weber, a fourth grade teacher from Concord Elementary in the Troy City School district, supervised Beams work and agreed that she embodied the mission of Urbana University by giving individual attention to her students. “Erin provided positive feedback to our students making each of them feel special. She was comfortable in front of the classroom and effectively used humor to instruct! Daily use of the SMART board helped reach each and every student,” stated Weber.
Seventeen Urbana University students participated in student teaching assignments this spring at school districts throughout Ohio including Adena Local, Troy City, Tecumseh Local, Benjamin Logan Local, Mechanicsburg Exempted Village, Miami East Local, Springfield City, Miami East, Covington Exempted Village, Piqua City, London City, North Union Local, Jonathan Alder Local, and Elgin Local. The education majors earn credits for the semester-long program.
