UU Continues to Honor Excellence Through Employee Recognition Awards

Urbana University held its annual Employee Appreciation Luncheon on April 5, 2012, in the Sara Landess Room inside the Urbana University Student Center. During the event, over 20 individuals were recognized for their contributions and service to Urbana University.

Employees were recognized for their service, beginning at the five year mark, and increasing in five year increments all the way up to the 25 year anniversary. The sole recipient of the 25 year recognition was Professor of Humanities Sylvia Wirsing-Bryant, PhD. Cheryl Fenno, PhD, received recognition for her 20th year of service to Urbana University.  Patricia Sommer, Secretary to the Dean of Students, had her 15th year of employment acknowledged.

Seven employees reach their tenth anniversary. Included in this group were: Catherine Brinnon, John Gore ’07 M.Ed., Robert Harness, James Judge, Jamie Lattimer ‘98, Lucinda Leugers, and James Westfall. Employees who achieved the mark of five years of service include: Michael Goldschmidt, Robert Marks, and Allen Wilbur.

During the luncheon ceremony, several employees were recognized for their contributions to the University in excellence in performance.

Beverly Chrisman, Assistant Registrar, was honored as the Administrative Employee of the Year. Mary Lee Zerkle, Field Placement Office Manager, was given an award recognizing her as the Staff Employee of the Year. April Corbin ‘11, System Administrator/Project Manager of Online Programs, was the recipient of the Faculty Employee of the Year award.

Other award recipients include the Johnny Appleseed Museum, which was recognized as a leader in innovation. The Moore Philanthropy Award was given to the Austin E. Knowlton Foundation, in recognition of their contributions to Urbana University. President Stephen Jones presented the Founders’ Award for Excellence to librarian Julie McDaniel. Joe Besecker, Director of the Johnny Appleseed Society, presented Dick and Pat Sommer with the Crystal Apple Award.

Kathy Yoder ‘66 was presented with the Alumni-Employee award. Chad Wells ’05, ’07 M.Ed. was recognized for his Excellence in Performance as an External Partner in Education for Urbana University.   Sodexo Campus Services issued Mark Price an award recognizing his excellence in performance. Sodexo Dining Services presented Arlene Rodin with recognition of excellence.

Urbana University awarded External Partner Award to Jayne Gmeiner and Anitra Martin on behalf of Premier Health Partners for their collaboration with the College of Nursing and Allied Health in launching the Masters of Science in Nursing Program on site at Miami Valley Hospital.

Gmeiner and Martin’s ongoing assistance and support, contributed to the nursing program’s outstanding success and substantial growth over the past two years; representing a 66% increase in enrollment.  Dean of the College of Nursing and Allied Health Nancy Sweeney stated, “We truly appreciate and value the partnership with Premier Health Partners and look forward to a long and successful relationship as we work together to improve the quality of healthcare in West Central Ohio.” 

The luncheon program was coordinated by the Office of Human Resources. Audrey Stevens ‘94 gave a presentation on making a difference, Betsy Coffman ‘71 provided the invocation, and President Stephen Jones gave the opening and closing remarks.
