Director of Alumni Relations Receives Virginia Carter Smith Scholarship

Kat Steiner, director of alumni relations in the Office of Institutional Advancement and Communications at UrbanaUniversity (UU), is the school’s first recipient of a Virginia Carter Smith Scholarship from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).

Steiner joined UU’s advancement department in April 2010 and is responsible for the day-to-day operations of Alumni Relations, which serves more than 7,000 alumni.  She also oversees the Alumni Advisory Board, the Alumni Association, marketing and communications to alumni, and supports regional and campus alumni events.  Prior to UU,she had worked in the Office of Educational Leadership and the Office of Residence Life at Wright State University. An Eaton, OH native, Steiner earned her master’s degree in student affairs in higher education with an emphasis in administration from Wright State University.

Steiner states, “I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity to pursue professional development.  Attending a conference will enhance my knowledge of trends in alumni relations to best serve the graduates of UrbanaUniversity.”

CASE provides 20 scholarships nationally each year for individuals who have three or fewer years of advancement experience to attend professional development conferences.  Selection is based upon career potential and experience, as well as recourse available for career development.  The program honors Virginia Carter Smith, former CASE president and Currents magazine founder, who was a strong advocate of advancing the careers of women and minorities.

CASE is a professional association serving educational institutions and the advancement professionals who work in alumni relations, communications, development, marketing and allied areas.  It is one of the world’s largest nonprofit education associations in terms of institutional membership, which includes more than 3,400 colleges and universities, primary and secondary independent and international schools, and nonprofit organizations in 74 countries.
