The Lincoln Exhibit at Urbana University

URBANA, OH (January 2, 2014) - Urbana University is host for the national traveling exhibit, “Abraham Lincoln: The Constitution and The Civil War.” The exhibit is free and open to the public, and located in the campus Swedenborg Memorial Library, 579 College Way. A series of free programs about Lincoln are scheduled during February and March in conjunction with the exhibit.

Based upon an original interactive exhibit developed by the National Constitution Center, this traveling version explores Lincoln’s struggle to resolve the basic questions that divided Americans at the most perilous moment in the nation’s history.

The creators of the exhibit report that in 1861 the issue of slavery created a national crisis framed largely in terms of constitutional issues. The framers of the Constitution had left unanswered some basic questions about the nature of the Federal Union they had created:

• Was the United States truly one nation, or was it a confederacy of sovereign and separate states?

• How could a country founded on the belief that “all men are created equal” tolerate slavery?

• In a national crisis, would civil liberties be secure?

By 1860, these unresolved questions had become ticking time bombs, ready to explode. Abraham Lincoln’s election as the nation’s first anti-slavery president brought the nation to the brink of war. Visitors to the exhibit can learn how Lincoln used the tools the Constitution gave him to confront three intertwined issues of the Civil War — the secession of Southern states, slavery, and wartime civil liberties.

Groups, classes, families and individuals are invited to visit the exhibit which will be open during the hours the library is normally open: Monday – Thursday 8 a.m. – 10 p.m.; Friday 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.; Saturday 12 noon – 4 p.m.; and Sunday 7 – 10 p.m. from February 8 – March 21, 2014. The library and exhibit will observe the following spring break hours during the week of Monday, March 8 to Friday, March 14, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. For details about the exhibit hours and associated programs, see the website: http://www.urbana.edu/resources/community/Lincoln2014.html
