Soccer Hosts Successful Alumni Games
The Urbana University soccer teams have had some good success over the years and that has created a bond among the alumni. And, when you add in the friendships that have grown stronger since graduation, you have Blue Knights that are proud of their soccer heritage.
Throughout the years, the soccer program has continued a tradition of hosting an annual alumni soccer match usually played on a Saturday in April. Alumnus Nick Guidera ’08, M’12 was a key coordinator for this year’s event and said, “ It was great to see so many Alum come back for this event. In the group that came back we had a wide range of participants. Some graduating just this spring and others graduating in 2003. No matter if we are fresh out of college, or 10 years ‘past our prime’ we still come back to support our current Blue Knights and show we still got it!”
The weather in the late morning was windy and chilly on April 13, but began to warm up during the women’s and men’s games at 1p.m. and 3p.m.
First up were the women donning black alumni t-shirts. Returning to play were many recent grads, as well as a handful of women from the early ‘00’s; all showed that they still have a tremendous love of the game and of each other.
On the men’s side, the calendar went even further back reaching into the late 90’s and early 00’s for several of their star players, as well as longtime head coach Nick Roberts.
After the game, alumni and friends gathered at La Palma for congratulatory cheers and a walk down memory lane. One common thread that was repeated many times after the games was we can’t wait until next year!
Guidera will be assisting with alumni soccer events for the following year and stated, “We all look forward to future events because we all came together in college as a team and now we come back as great friends sharing in a favorite past time and memories.”
