URBANA, Ohio (January 25, 2010) - Urbana University announces the return of the Shelton Leadership Challenge to campus June 20-25, 2010! The Shelton Leadership Challenge is a one week summer experience for rising freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors in high school with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. General H. Hugh Shelton's cornerstones of values based leadership - honesty, integrity, compassion, diversity, and social responsibility - are the foundations of the experience. The core curriculum focuses on leadership roles and accountability, team building, leadership styles and situations, social responsibility, integrity as a leader, public speaking, changing behaviors, and goal setting. Urbana University is the only institution in the Midwest offering this program.

Participants will:

  • Participate in team building activities focused on the cornerstones of values based leadership.
  • Assess personal leadership skills and practice leading teammates daily.
  • Through teamwork, practice interpersonal skills, leadership styles, goal setting, how to motivate others, personal presence and public speaking, ethical decision making and how to change behaviors.
  • Participate in a service project in a local community.
  • Develop and practice skills related to self and team reflection to relate current experiences to future applications, with the ultimate intent of continuous character improvement.
  • Participate in fun night activities such as an ice cream social, talent show, dance or game night.

Last year, Urbana University hosted thirteen high school students from Champaign, Clark, and Logan Counties in Ohio. In 2010, we hope to expand to over sixty high school students from across Ohio and the Midwest.

Christina is just one of the students who found courage in the process of facing challenge last year. Christina hesitantly attended the Shelton Challenge. In the first day or two, she was shy and avoided talking with her teammates. She only spoke to the friend with whom she came. On the third day of the program at the Leadership Reaction Course, Christina did not participate. When the facilitators asked if everyone on their team participated, Christina's team responded that they all completed the Course. After checking, the team realized that there was an "invisible" member of the team who did not participate. On the next activity, Christina's team insisted Christina participate. By supporting her, Christina's teammates helped her overcome her fears and see that everyone is a leader in some way. Christina then led two activities with her team and was selected by the entire group of participants to emcee the Shelton Challenge graduation.
