About Us

History

Urbana University was founded in 1850. The founding of the University was laid in part by John Chapman, better known as "Johnny Appleseed". Urbana University was the second institution in Ohio to admit women.

Campus

Our 128 acre campus, located in Urbana, a picturesque city in west central Ohio, is a blend of modern and traditional architecture. Our campus offers the safety of a small town with the convenience of being less than an hour from the major metropolitan areas of Columbus and Dayton.

Faculty

Urbana faculty are experts in their field and passionate about teaching. Unlike some institutions, our classes are all taught exclusively by faculty not teaching assistants or graduate students. With an average class size of 16, you will create lasting bonds with professors, 74% of whom hold a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in their subject area.

Scholarships/Student Financial Assistance

We work with students and their families to make an Urbana University education more affordable. Scholarships, grants, work-study jobs and loans help students defray the cost of a college education. In fact, more than 90% of all Urbana University students receive some type of financial assistance.

Our financial assistance program ensures that our first priority is to our students. The staff in the Financial Aid Office understand that a college education is a "big" investment; we work with our students to assist them on their way toward a professional career or graduate studies.

Campus Life

At Urbana University, every student has the opportunity to become involved in many campus activities. The academic clubs, honor societies, and professional associations allow students to combine their interests with their major. The Student Government Association and the Student Activities Committee provide leadership experiences. If a student prefers to participate in the local community, there are opportunities provided through one of our many service-oriented groups.

Students & Enrollment

With an enrollment of nearly 1,500 students, Urbana is small enough to foster close connections between faculty and students, but large enough to provide cutting edge programs that will help students build the skills necessary to succeed in the career path of their choice. Urbana University students are a diverse mix of men and women from Ohio, 18 other states and 8 countries.

Blue Knight Athletics

To be a Blue Knight student athlete is to be part of something truly unique and special. Although athletics is an integral part of our campus environment, it is the pride that we take in the development of the total person that is most rewarding. The core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, leadership, and sportsmanship are paramount in all that we do. It is our goal as an athletic department to take a valued interest in every student-athlete who desires to attend Urbana University.

Urbana University is a member of the NCAA Division II for the men's and women's athletic teams. Scholarships are available for all intercollegiate and club team sports.

Academics

At Urbana University, our first priority is academic excellence. Our graduates are well-prepared, confident men and women who succeed in their chosen careers and contribute to their communities. The big difference at Urbana is our approach to learning. We are committed to small class sizes to ensure a close interaction with the professors. The faculty maintains an open-door policy to the students by extending office hours and providing additional help in the Student Success Center. Each of our academic majors prepare our graduates for success in their chosen career or graduate school through a combination of classroom instruction, real world experiences, community partnerships, and technology.

Urbana University's Honors program provides an additional academic opportunity for students who meet the criteria. Once a student is accepted into the University, they may apply to the Honors program.
