Grants and Scholarships

Urbana University Scholarship Programs

Urbana University offers a very competitive scholarship program to our new students! Students are automatically considered for these scholarships once they submit an application for admission to Urbana University. We select students on the basis of academic performance and involvement in co-curricular activities.

Freshman Academic Scholarships
Our academic scholarship program offers scholarships that range from $1,000 to $8,000 based upon high school grade point average and ACT score at the time of acceptance to Urbana University. Your award does not become final until we receive your final high school transcript after you graduate from high school.

Champaign County Scholarships
Graduating seniors at all five Champaign County high schools have an opportunity to participate in a yearly essay contest for one full-tuition scholarship. There are also runner-up scholarships awarded to one individual from each high school. Each high school is given the criteria for this scholarship program during February of each year and all essays are due no later than April 15 yearly. The essay is to describe how Urbana University has made an impact on Champaign County and how UU has impacted their family as well. Applicants must have at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA and must submit letters of recommendation with their essay.

Transfer Student Scholarships
Transfer students can receive a great scholarship to Urbana University as well. Our Transfer Student Scholarship program reviews your performance in the classroom. Your scholarship eligibility will be based upon your final grades from the last college that you attended.

Honors College Scholarships
Students who are up to the task of a more challenging curriculum can be considered for our Honors College. Students can receive a scholarship up to $5,000 (based upon ACT score) for their participation in our Honors College. Please contact our Admissions Office for more information on our Honors College. It’s a huge challenge, but very rewarding as well!

Valedictorian and Salutatorian Scholarships
The Valedictorian Scholarship is awarded to students who have been selected by their high school as the class valedictorian. Students must present proof of their selection in order to be eligible to receive this scholarship. The maximum amount for the Valedictorian Scholarship is $14,000! This scholarship opportunity is only open to first-time, full-time freshman students at Urbana University.

The Salutatorian Scholarship is awarded to students who have been selected by their high school as the class salutatorian. Students must present proof of their selection in order to be eligible to receive this scholarship. The maximum amount for the Salutatorian Scholarship is $10,000! This scholarship opportunity is only open to first-time, full-time freshman students at Urbana University.

Athletic Scholarships
If you are an athlete and want to continue your participation on into the collegiate level, you can contact one of our head coaches for information regarding that sport. To get in touch with our athletic department, please call our Athletics Office at (937) 484-1325. As we venture into the NCAA Division II world, you can benefit from being a collegiate athlete! Our athletic scholarship program is very competitive with our competition, and we are very proud of that initiative.

Performing Arts Scholarships
Our Royal Blues Marching Band has grown each year and is always looking for new people to add to
their ensemble. Students may receive a scholarship for their participation in our Royal Blues Marching Band. Please contact Mr. John Gore our Band Director at (937) 484-1371 for more information regarding the Royal Blues Band.

Our Choir and Theatre programs are growing as well! Students who love to sing or perform on stage are encouraged to participate in those programs. Students who participate in our Choir or Theatre programs may receive a scholarship for their participation in either of those programs. Cheerleading Scholarships
If you are interested in showing your Urbana University Blue Knight spirit, you may be able to participate in our cheerleading program. Students whom participate in our cheerleading program may receive a scholarship based on talent, participation, and financial need. Federal and State

Undergraduate students may be eligible for the following federal and state programs. Eligibility is based on the information supplied on the FAFSA and enrollment status each semester.

  • Federal Pell Grant - Students seeking assistance may apply for this need based federal grant by filing the FAFSA or Renewal FAFSA. The amount of this grant varies and ranges from $400 to $4,310 for the 2007-2008 academic year.
  • Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant - Urbana University awards these federal funds to students who have high financial need. To apply, file the FAFSA or Renewal FAFSA. The amount of this grant varies.
  • HRSA Grants in Nursing - Application deadlines vary according to program.
  • Scholarship for Disadvantaged Students (SDS) - The Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students program provides scholarships to full-time, financially needy students from disadvantaged backgrounds, enrolled in health professions and nursing programs.
  • Ohio Choice Grant - This state program provides a grant of $660 for the 2007-2008 academic year. Ohio Choice Grant is awarded to each full-time student who is a resident of Ohio; has not enrolled full-time at a college or university prior to July 1, 1984; attends a private, four-year institution; and is pursuing a bachelor’s degree. To receive this grant, eligible students must complete and return an Ohio Choice Certification form.
  • Ohio Environmental Education Fund
  • Ohio Instructional Grant - This program is available to eligible students who are residents of Ohio. To apply for this program, a student must file the FAFSA or Renewal FAFSA by October 1 each year. Eligibility is based on family income and number of dependents. Students must be full-time. This award ranges from $444 to $5,466 for the 2007-2008 academic year.
  • Ohio Academic Scholarship - Awarded to one student from each Ohio high school who will be enrolled in an Ohio college or university. The amount of the scholarship is $2,205 per year. Contact a high school guidance counselor for more information.
  • Ohio War Orphan Scholarship - Awarded to students whose parent served at least 90 days of active duty during a declared war or conflict and is severely disabled or deceases as a result of service. Applications are available from high school guidance counselors or veterans offices. The amount for private education is $5,100 for the 2006-2007 academic year.
  • Ohio National Guard Tuition Grant - This program is offered to eligible members of the National Guard. This grant pays the average state-assisted university’s tuition costs at private institutions recognized by the Ohio Board of Regents. The grant is available for undergraduate studies.   • American Chemical Society Scholarship

    Overview
    The American Chemical Society provides scholarships for qualified applicants who want to enter the fields of CHEMISTRY, BIOCHEMISTRY, CHEMICAL ENGINEERING or other chemically related fields such as environmental science, materials science or toxicology. The program is designed to encourage African-American, Hispanic/Latino, and American Indian students to pursue degrees in the chemical sciences and chemical technology.

    Awards
    Scholarships are for up to $2,500 for freshman and up to $3,000 for sophomores, juniors and seniors per academic year. The scholarships are renewable for all four or five years of an undergraduate degree so long as the student maintains a GPA of 3.0 in an approved major. Renewal forms and transcripts are required each year.

    Eligibility
    To qualify, candidates must be:

    • African-American, Hispanic/Latino, or American Indian;
    • U.S. citizen or permanent resident of the U.S.;
    • Full-time student at an accredited college, university, or community college;
    • High academic achiever in chemistry or science (Grade Point Average of 3.0 or higher);
    • Able to demonstrate evidence of financial need according to FAFSA form;

    High school senior, college freshman, sophomore or junior intending to or already majoring in chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering or a chemically-related science and planning a career in the chemical sciences or chemical technology. NOTE: STUDENTS PLANNING CAREERS IN MEDICINE OR PHARMACY ARE NOT ELIGIBLE FOR THIS PROGRAM.

    How to Apply
    To apply, students must complete an application form, provide the financial need document referred to as an SAR (Student Aid Report), and submit transcripts and required letters of recommendations. Only complete application files will be considered by the Selection Committee. The deadline for submitting applications is March 1, annually.

  • American Association of University Women (AAUW) Scholarship
    The American Association of University Women (AAUW) Champaign County chapter typically offers an annual scholarship for non-traditional age women living in Champaign County.  This year, they have a $600 scholarship to "an eligible Champaign County woman who has been out of school (high school) for at least three years and is returning to continue her education."  The scholarship will be awarded in the fall.

  • Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship
    Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by IIE through its Southern Regional Center, this program enables students who have limited financial means the opportunity to participate in study abroad opportunities worldwide. The program provides awards up to $5,000 for U.S. citizen undergraduate students at two-and four-year institutions to pursue country-based semester or academic year long study abroad opportunities. To be eligible, students must be receiving a Pell grant at the time of application and cannot be studying abroad in a country currently under a U.S. Department of State Travel Warning or in Cuba.   • Casey Family Programs College Scholarship

    Applications are open to youth who have been in some foster care experience. To view eligibility requirements, click on www.orphan.org and view scholarships link on the left side of the page. The scholarship director at Orphan Foundation of America, Tina Raheem is also available to assist students, advocates, caregivers, and professionals.   • Clark County Retired Teachers Association Scholarships

    Scholarship applications from the Clark County Retired Teachers Association are available. For the Clark County Retired Teachers Association Scholarship, applicants must be residents of Clark County, Ohio, and have graduated from the Springfield City or Clark County Schools.

    For the Jeff Binz Scholarship, applicants must be residents of Clark County or Springfield City and be a graduate of Northeastern Local School District.

    Both must be an education major, be no less than Junior Class Status in college by the coming fall term and a minimum grade point average of 2.5 including the past term. Applications are accepted from January 20 through March 20. The recipient will be notified in April. Written requests for application forms should include a self-addressed, stamped envelope and sent to the Scholarship Chairwoman, Mrs. Esther Manuel, 789 Westchester Park Dr., Springfield, Ohio 45504.

  • Cleveland Scholarship Programs - Ohio Transfer Council Scholarship

    Who is eligible?

  • Students who are transferring from a participating OTC college to a participating OTC college.

Both colleges must be participating members of the Ohio Transfer Council.

  • Transfer students who have completed at least 30 semester credit hours OR 45 quarter credit hours.
  • Transfer students who have maintained a 2.5 cumulative grade point average during their undergraduate coursework.
  • Transfer students who were previously enrolled for at least 6 semester/ 9 quarter hours, and will continue course load at the transfer school.

  • Coca-Cola Scholars Program
    This scholarship is for first-time, full-time freshman who are both strong academically and engaged in other kinds of positive indicators (community service, leadership, etc.). 
  • David Scholarship
    A 4-year renewable scholarship for $4,500 each year.

    Who May Apply:
    • Only high school seniors
    • Scholarship is only available to seniors at Stark County high schools.  You do need to be graduating from a Stark County, Ohio high school in order to apply for a scholarship.
  • Helping Hands Book Scholarship Program
    This scholarship was created to assist students with the high cost of textbooks. Awards are open to individuals age 16 or higher who are planning to attend or currently attending a 2 year or 4 year college or university, or a vocational/technical institution. Up to 50 awards are made annually. The Helping Hands Stipend is in one-time amounts of $100-$1000. Awards may be use in any year, but are non-renewable. Awards are paid in one installment, and mailed to the student's home address at least two weeks prior to the upcoming semester. Checks are made payable to the recipient. The deadlines for this scholarship are: FALL SEMESTER: Applications must be post-marked by July 15. SPRING SEMESTER: Applications must be postmarked by December 15. Applications are available at www.helpinghandsbookscholarship.com.

  • Hispanic Scholarship Fund
    The Hispanic Scholarship Fund is the nation’s leading organization supporting Hispanic higher education. Founded in 1975, HSF’s vision is to strengthen the country by advancing college education among Hispanic Americans. During its 29-year history, HSF has awarded more than 68,000 scholarships in excess $144 million to Hispanic students who have attended more than 1,700 colleges and universities.

    Awards for Hispanic Scholarship Fund scholarships range from $1,000 to $2,500.

    General Eligibility Requirements:

    • Be of Hispanic heritage
    • Be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident with a permanent resident card or passport stamped I-551 (not expired)
    • Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA required on a 4.0 scale (or the equivalent)
    • Must have applied for federal financial aid

  • LULAC National Scholarship Fund
    The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) Councils will award scholarships to qualified Hispanic students who are enrolled or are planning to enroll in accredited colleges or universities in the United States. Awards start at $250.

    Eligibility Requirements
    Applicants must meet the following criteria to be considered for a scholarship:

    • Must be a U.S. citizen or legal resident.
    • Must have applied to or be enrolled in a college, university, or graduate school, including 2-year colleges, excluding vocational schools.
    • A student will not be eligible for a scholarship if he/she is related to a scholarship committee member, the Council President, or an individual contributor to the local funds of the Council

Award Criteria
Applicants are eligible for the following three types of scholarship awards:

National Scholastic Achievement Awards ($1000 and higher)
Criteria for entering freshman:

  • Student must be enrolled fulltime in a college or university and have a GPA of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale or equivalent.
  • Also an entering freshman must have scored 23 or higher on the ACT test, or a 970 or higher on the SAT test.

Criteria for currently enrolled college students:

  • Student must be enrolled fulltime in a college or university during both scholarship disbursement periods and have a GPA of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale or equivalent.
Honors Awards ($250 to $1000)
Criteria for entering freshman:
  • Student must be enrolled fulltime in a college or university and have a GPA of 3.25 or better of a 4.0 scale or equivalent.
  • Also an entering freshman must have scored 20 or higher on the ACT test, or 840 or higher on the SAT test.

Criteria for currently enrolled college students:

  • Student must be enrolled fulltime in a college or university during both scholarship disbursement periods and have a GPA of 3.25 or better on a 4.0 scale or equivalent.

General Awards
Grades and academic performance will serve as indicators of potential; emphasis may be placed on the individual’s motivation, sincerity, and integrity, which can best be revealed through a personal interview and in the personal essay. Need, community involvement, and leadership activities will also be considered. This award is available to college, university or graduate students attending classes full or part-time.

  • Sallie Mae Fund Project Access
    Addressing financial need is one of the key elements of The Sallie Mae Fund's community-based initiative, Project Access. To help students and families afford the cost of higher education and ensure funding is not a barrier to access, Project Access provides financial assistance through scholarships. Details and an application can be obtained online from The Sallie Mae Fund.

  • Sallie Mae Fund Scholarship Programs
    • The Sallie Mae 9/11 Education Fund
      Created in response to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, the 9/11 Education Fund provides scholarship dollars to children of those who were killed or permanently disabled in the attacks. Deadline: OPEN

    To be eligible for The Sallie Mae Fund Scholarship Programs, students must be accepted and enrolled at a Title IV eligible, accredited postsecondary two- or four-year college or university, vocational, or technical school in the United States or Puerto Rico and meet program-specific eligibility requirements.
  • Scholarship for Disadvantaged Students
    The Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students program provides scholarships to full-time, financially needy students from disadvantaged backgrounds, enrolled in health professions and nursing programs. Participating schools are responsible for selecting scholarship recipients, making reasonable determinations of need, and providing scholarships that do not exceed the cost of attendance (tuition, reasonable educational expenses and reasonable living expenses).
  • Thelma Ross Dalton Memorial Scholarship
    Provides scholarships for Miami County residents wishing to further their post-high school education in any accredited college, trade/vocational, nursing or health related facility.
