While the history of the band program at Urbana University is rather brief, it has been marked by substantial growth.

Band Director John Gore began the work of developing the program at Urbana University in the fall of 2002 with only eight members. The band functioned primarily as a pep band the first two years, performing at University athletic contests and providing music for special events on campus. All along however, Gore had plans to create a marching band out of The Royal Blues.

The Royal Blues increased in size quickly, and by the beginning of August, 2004 it consisted of 30 members. Its premiere performance as a marching band occurred August 18, 2004 when it "surprised" a meeting of faculty and staff by marching into the Grimes Center gymnasium and performing a couple of numbers, including Urbana University's fight song. The band got a standing ovation.

The University community and area residents have seen The Royal Blues marching band perform at Urbana University home football games and University events, as well as perform in parades. The Pep Band continues to perform at Urbana University home basketball games and other University functions. The Concert Band was formed in the spring of 2005 and the jazz band was formed in the spring of 2008.

The future of The Royal Blues and the music program at Urbana University is bright!
