Blue Knights Tie School Record with 2-1 Double Overtime Win
McCullough scores golden goal in 107th minute
URBANA, Ohio (Oct. 9, 2007) -- The Urbana University women’s soccer team needed two overtimes, but got a 2-1 victory over Cedarville University (3-8-1, 1-2-1 AMC) Tuesday at Ellis Field, bringing their overall record to 12-2, tying the Blue Knight single season record for wins. More importantly, it gives the Blue Knights a 3-1 record in the American Mideast Conference (South Division), allowing them to stay in second place in the standings. They trail No. 10 Ohio Dominican by one game. With the win, Urbana is undefeated on the season on its home turf at Ellis Field.
Urbana (12-2-0, 3-1-0 AMC) got on the board in a hurry, as freshman Kayleen Roth ( Westerville, Ohio/Westerville South) found the back of the net in the second minute (1:22) of the contest. She scored on a corner kick taken by junior Abi Nelson ( Waynesville, Ohio/Waynesville).
More than 100 minutes later, Nelson had an assist on the game winner as well, giving her a team-high 10 on the season. Nelson passed ahead to senior Darby McCullough ( Urbana, Ohio/Graham) who sped past the Cedarville defender and drilled the back of the net past the keeper, near side post, in the 107 th minute (106:04). Urbana held just a 9-6 lead in shots taken heading into overtime, but blasted Cedarville for nine shots, while giving up none in the two extra periods.
Cedarville’s Katie Koch scored the equalizer in the eighth minute (7:30) of the match on an assist from Kristun Merkel.
Melanie Johansing had one save in goal for Urbana, while Cedarville’s Amber Laing had six.
Urbana plays a non-conference game at Anderson, Ind. this Thursday, Oct. 11 at 4 p.m.
