Carlisle’s Anthony First Ever Blue Knight Women’s Golfer
CARLISLE, Ohio (April 12, 2005) – Urbana University history was made in the halls of Carlisle High School today. Blue Knight women’s golf coach Jacqueline Howell – who was recently appointed head of Urbana’s newest sport – signed her first recruit and the first in the school’s 155-year history.
Camille Anthony (seated, left), a senior at Carlisle High School, was the history maker, signing her letter of intent to play golf for Urbana University. Anthony is no stranger to pioneering the sport of golf for women. She was the first girl to golf at Carlisle and was the lone female on the high school boys’ team.
“I like being a trendsetter,” Anthony said. “Being the first women’s golfer in a program is nothing new to me.”
Howell – who after teaching for 25 years – is coaching for the first time and this is all a new territory for her.
“It’s refreshing to have Cami sign,” said Howell. “It feels great. She wasn’t afraid to take that step and become the first to help build this program. She had that confidence, being the lone girl on the Carlisle boys’ golf team, and now she brings that confidence to Urbana.”
Anthony, who is also a member of National Honor Society, earned Honorable Mention All-SWBL honors her senior year in golf and was named her team’s Most Improved Player. Plus, she was named Most Dedicated Swimmer for the Carlisle swim team.
“She is not just a golfer, she is a great student-athlete,” said Howell. “I want to recruit athletes who set education as their number one priority. As any golfer knows, the mental edge is 90 percent of the game. She has the confidence, the smarts and the mental toughness to be successful at the next level.”
Camille is the daughter of Chris and Darlene Anthony of Miamisburg, Ohio.
