Head Coach Rob Phillips Breaks 300 Career Mark
URBANA, Oh (Nov. 12, 2007)—Urbana University head women’s basketball coach Rob Phillips reached a career milestone with his team’s 75-60 win over visiting Point Park University on Saturday as he recorded is 300th career coaching victory.

Phillips milestone includes two different head coaching positions, the Blue Knights and Waynesburg College.  Phillips started the program at Waynesburg College where he remains the school’s winningest coach. Phillips came to Urbana from Waynesburg despite the fact the Urbana was struggling to find a winning season. He turned the program around and in his 13 years amassed 204 wins.  Before heading into the 2007-2008 season, Phillips record at Urbana was 204-183 and 298-233 in 19 years overall.

With 300 wins under his belt in 19 years of coaching, Phillips has seen a lot of changes through the years. “We’ve been through a cycle. When I first got here, I was hired to rebuild the program. They had only won three or four games, and I was given the resources to recruit and get a winning team in here.” With Urbana’s transition to NCAA Division II in progress, he foresees more changes in the program and the level of talent. “We will be seeing more talent and depth.” Phillips wasn’t concerned only about talent however but their talent in the classroom as well. He takes pride in knowing he has players who can “excel in the classroom” on a consistent basis.

With his current team’s 2-0 start to the season, Phillips has moved past yet another coaching milestone. He however isn’t dwelling on his accomplishment too much. “There are natural milestones. Its not something I gave much thought to because it wasn’t a goal of mine.” He still is happy with his accomplishment however. “I’m proud because we’ve won that many games. It makes you realize how long you have been doing it.”

Phillips will look to add three more wins this week as his team will take on Malone College at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13th and play in the Urbana Classic where they will face off against Carlow University on Friday, Nov. 16th at 8 p.m. The tournament and its championship games will run Friday and Saturday with games at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Friday as well as a consolation game on Saturday at 1 p.m. and the Championship game will tip-off at 3 p.m.
