Four Blue Knights Garner AMC Awards
URBANA, Oh (March 10, 2008)—Four Blue Knights were honored as the American Mideast Conference announced the all-AMC women’s basketball selections.
Junior transfer Tia Simms (Fremont, Ohio) was a second team selection as well as being named Newcomer of the Year, an award teammate Haley Fannon (St. Mary’s, Ohio) picked up just last season. Fannon was named to this year’s third team. Junior Enisia Curry (Mansfield, Ohio) and freshman Jessica Byrd (Cincinnati, Ohio) were given honorable mention honors. Byrd was also named to the all-AMC Freshman Team.
Simms led the Blue Knights this season with 13.6 points per game and led the AMC South division in steals per game with 3.11, totaling 84 on the season. Sam Riley earned the honor in 2005 while Fannon earned it in 2007.
Fannon changed roles in 2008 and stepped into a scoring role as she averaged 11.0 points per game this season. Fannon also ranked second in the AMC in three-point field goal percentage, connecting on 46 of 104 attempts for a .442 average. She also led the league in minutes played and was ranked in the top 15 in the conference in assists.
Curry almost averaged a double-double this season, pitching in 10.1 points per game along with 7.7 rebounds a game, which was good enough for 12th in the conference. She led the Blue Knights in rebounding in 13 games this season. She also led the team in blocks with 22.
Byrd had a phenomenal year as a true freshman, averaging 9.9 points a game. She was second on the team in blocks with 19. She was also third on the team in assists with 69. She started every game this season for the Blue Knights.
