Blue Knights Go 1-1 at SSU
Urbana falls in 12-inning marathon; bounce back with 7-0 shutout
PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (April 24, 2008) – The Blue Knights took one of two American Mideast Conference games from Shawnee State at Doc Singleton Field Thursday. The Bears scraped out a 9-8 win in a 12-inning marathon game, and Urbana took care of business in game two, shutting out SSU, 7-0.

The Blue Knights committed six errors in the first contest, yet still battled back-and-forth for 12 innings. The Bears got on the board first in the bottom of the third. Urbana finally scored its first run in the fifth as freshman Kayla Nenninger (pictured left) hit her first collegiate homerun. SSU regained the lead with a two-run fifth. The Blue Knights cut into the lead on an RBI single by senior Jackie Masur in the sixth. SSU added another run in the sixth to pull ahead, 4-2. Urbana rallied in the seventh on RBI single by Nenninger. Nenninger then scored the tying run on the Bears’ only error of the game. The next two innings, the teams matched each other with one run in the eighth and three runs in the ninth. The Bears scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the 12 th on a walk-off triple, scoring a runner who got on by error.

Urbana came back with plenty of steam in the second game, committing no errors and picking up a 7-0 shutout. Sophomore Brittany Heunen had a stellar game accounting for five of Urbana’s seven runs. She led the Blue Knights at the plate, going 3-for-4 with 3 RBI and two runs scored. Heunen scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Jessica Tuttle in the third. Finley crushed a two-run homerun to give Urbana a 4-0 lead. Heunen took care of the rest of the Blue Knight runs with a three-run shot in the fourth inning. Finley got the shutout and improves to 5-4 on the season.

Urbana hosts the Bears Saturday, April 26 at 1 p.m.
