Urbana Bats Bury Cedarville in Game Two
Blue Knights split AMC doubleheader with Yellow Jackets
URBANA, Ohio (April 15, 2008) – The Urbana University softball team saved all of its hits for the second game of an American Mideast Conference double header against Cedarville University Tuesday at Blue Knight Field. The Yellow Jackets won the first game, 4-1, holding Urbana to just four hits. The Blue Knight bats came alive in game two, as Urbana rallied for a 10-1 win, using 13 hits.
Freshman pitcher Danielle Finley helped herself out in the first game, crushing a homerun over the centerfield fence to square the game at one-all after two innings. Seniors Erin Dowdell and Jackie Masur, along with sophomore Jessie Swinderman, were the only three players to single in the opener. Cedarville’s Mallory White (10-8) struck out 11 Blue Knights.
Game two was a whole new ball game. White started the second game for the Yellow Jackets, but this time Urbana had an answer for her. The Blue Knights gained an early 2-0 lead after one inning, and never looked back. Masur got two of her five RBI in the second inning to extend Urbana’s lead to 4-0. The Blue Knights had a monster third inning, racking up six hits (two more in one inning than in the entire first game) and six runs.
Dowdell was a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate and had 2 RBI. Masur was 2-for-3 with 5 RBI and also had four assists on the day, coming on spectacular diving plays. Junior Erica Schroeder was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Freshman pitcher Ashley Meyer (2-1) gave up just six hits in a complete five-inning game effort.
Urbana will play at Wilmington College this Thursday, April 17 at 3:30 p.m. in a non-conference doubleheader.
