Off to the Races – Career Days Lead to Urbana Win
Blue Knights score 52 in first half
URBANA, Ohio (February 5, 2008) – Blue Knight juniors David Brown and Charles Jefferson had career games to lead Urbana to a 92-86 American Mideast Conference win over visiting Wilberforce Tuesday night. The victory allowed Urbana to avenge a 98-90 loss to the Bulldogs on Jan. 8.
Brown and Jefferson had the hot hand for the Blue Knights as both scored a career-high 26 points. Brown had 19 in the first half, helping Urbana to an immense, 52-30 lead at the half. The 52 points is the most the Blue Knights have scored in the first stanza this season. The only other game this season that Urbana scored more points in a period was when they put up 54 in the second vs. Kentucky State on Nov. 21.
In addition to his career-high 26 points, Brown also tied a personal best by dishing out six assists, plus had four steals. Jefferson went 9-of-14 from the field and 6-of-6 from the charity stripe to reach his career high. He also had a personal best in another category, nabbing a career-high five steals.
Another notable performance for the Blue Knights was Allen Drake’s double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds, marking his second of the 07-08 season. Senior Harold Haynes also scored in double figures, putting 10 up.
Wilberforce (7-15, 1-8 AMC) made the first basket of the game and owned a 5-4 lead with 17:47 to play in the first half, and that’s when the Blue Knights caught fire. Urbana used a 20-6 run to close out the half and take a commanding 22-point lead.
The margin ballooned to a 26-point Blue Knight lead on a pair of Brown free throws with 11:57 left to play in the contest. Urbana held that same 26-point lead on a fast break lay up by Jefferson with 8:29 remaining.
The Bulldogs’ scrappy defense forced seven turnovers in a span of seven minutes and cut the insurmountable lead to just a four-point deficit with 1:13 showing on the scoreboard. The Blue Knights sank four free throws in the final minute to secure the victory for Urbana (5-18, 3-6 AMC).
The Blue Knights play at Ohio Dominican this Saturday, Feb. 8 at 4 p.m. for an American Mideast Conference game.
