Haynes Sinks 20 in Blue Knight Loss
Urbana drops non-conference contest to Central State, 80-69
URBANA, Ohio (January 31, 2008) – Urbana University had it all knotted up at the half with 36 points for each team in its non-conference game vs. Central State Thursday night at the Grimes Center Gymnasium. A slow start to the second stanza spelled doom for the Blue Knights as the Marauders used a 17-3 run to take a commanding lead that Urbana, ultimately, could not overcome, and suffered an 80-69 loss.
The first half saw eight ties and 12 lead changes as both squads battled for an edge. The visitors held a six-point, 28-22, advantage after CSU's Linconln Bradley drilled a trey at the 5:51 mark. The Blue Knights clawed back and even owned a two-point lead with 28 seconds remaining in the half on a Harold Haynes jumper. CSU's Boo Wade drained the equalizer at the buzzer to give the Marauders the momentum heading into halftime.
The momentum was a killer for the Blue Knights as Urbana missed 14 of its first 17 shots of the half. The Blue Knight offense that thrived in the first half, seemed stymied by the Marauder zone defense. CSU capitalized, scoring the first seven points of the second period. The Blue Knights finally got on the board on a Dorian Hoover lay up at the 17:43 mark.
The Marauders owned a solid 19-point lead with 6:41 to play, but Urbana made a run at the 71-54 mountain. The Blue Knights cut the lead to 73-66 with 3:41 to play on a Haynes jump shot at the corner of the key. CSU's Bradley hit the backbreaker with 2:44 remaining in the contest, stroking a trifecta.
Urbana struggled from three-point range, hitting just 25 percent from behind the arc, including just 1-of-9 in the second half.
Haynes led Urbana in scoring with 20 points to go along with six rebounds and two assists. Junior David Brown had a solid box with 14 points, two steals and a season-high six assists. Junior Dorian Hoover tied a season high with 10 rebounds. Senior Allen Drake continues his consistent play with 11 points and seven rebounds. Senior Joe Williams chipped in five assists.
CSU's Linconln led all scorers with 22 points, while teammate Jeremy Hightower had a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Urbana is back in action Saturday, Feb. 2 at 4 p.m. when they host Rio Grande in an American Mideast Conference showdown at the Grimes Center.
