Urbana Struggles as UD Has record Day
Flyers Take 45-7 Decision
DAYTON, Ohio (September 8, 2007) – The Blue Knights couldn’t carry over the momentum of their first-ever overtime win – a 27-21 double overtime victory last week against West Virginia Tech, 27-21 – when they ran into a powerful Dayton Flyer football team at Welcome Stadium. UD scored the first touchdown and never relinquished the lead, going on to win, 45-7.
Urbana (1-1) falls to 0-5 in the series versus the Flyers, who had record performances by senior quarterback Kevin Hoyng and wide receiver Matt Champa. Hoyng threw for 285 yards and four TDs, tying a Flyer record, and Champa caught nine passes, the second-best performance in a single game. The UD quarterbacks combined for 33 completions, breaking a UD record.
The Flyers (2-0) didn’t score their first points until late in the first quarter with 52 seconds showing on the clock. Hoyng threw a three-yard slant to Michael Jonard for the first of five UD passing touchdowns. Hoyng found Champa on a 43-yard pass route to put the Flyers up 14-0.
CJ Westler connected with senior Barry Quinn for Urbana’s only score of the game, a 22-yard pass play with 4:38 to play in the first half. UD answered on its next drive to take a commanding 21-7 lead. The Blue Knights had a chance to pull within one score heading into the half. Westler hit Albert Floyd for a 42-yard game on the Flyers’ 30-yard line with less than a minute to play. On the very next play Westler was intercepted by Scott Horcher. Quinn made the tackle that saved Urbana from a UD TD, but the Flyers converted a 34-yard field goal as time expired to take a three-possession lead.
It was all Dayton in the second half. The UD offense was on the field almost two times as much as the Blue Knight offensive crew. The Flyers’ time of possession was 39:27 to Urbana’s 20:33. Westler finished the contest completing 12-of-22 attempts for 126 yards, a TD and two interceptions. His leading receiver was Rodney Holmes with six catches for 33 yards. The Blue Knight running game was shut down, only gaining 91 yards on 22 carries. Kirk Hannah led the way with 51 yards. The Urbana defense limited UD to just 113 yards rushing, but the Flyers racked up 395 passing yards and five TDs. Junior Chris Rutledge led Urbana with nine tackles. Chad Kinkead, Kevin Weber and Ben Bastin each added eight stops. Defensive highlights include a fumble recovery by Bastin and a 53-yard interception return by DeMarius Anderson.
Urbana returns to action Saturday at nationally-ranked McKendree University for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff. The following week, the Blue Knights will play in their home opener when they host St. Francis, Ill. With a noon kickoff at Ellis Field.
