Blue
Knights Baseball Coaching Staff
Mike Goldschmidt
Head Coach
In August of 2007, Urbana University named MikeGoldschmidt as their 8th head baseball coach in the programs history. Goldschmidt takes over at an exciting time in Blue Knights athletics, as Urbana is making the transition from NAIA to the NCAA Division II beginning in 2009.
On the doorstep of his 200th career win, Goldschmidt comes to Urbana from Sinclair Community College in Dayton, Ohio, where he was a two-time Ohio Community College Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, in both 2006 and 2007. With his best season ever in 2007, the Tartan-Pride posted their second-straight 40-win campaign, advancing to the NJCAA Region 12 Tournament back-to-back seasons.
During his five seasons Goldschmidt built Sinclair baseball into one of the best NJCAA programs in Ohio and the mid-west. He amassed 189 wins in his tenure and became the quickest coach to amass 100 wins in Sinclair school history. Goldschmidt’s squads won three conference championships and broke nearly every Tartan-Pride record. His teams won 35 or more games in four out of his five seasons and six of his former players are currently in professional baseball.
In 2007, the bar was raised yet again as Sinclair went 44-15, and for the third straight season broke the school record for wins in a season. The Tartan-Pride finished 3rd in the NJCAA Region 12 Tournament, the schools highest finish in its history and again swept the Conference Coach, Pitcher, and Player of the Year awards from the OCCAC.
Goldschmidt’s 2006 Tartan-Pride again set a new standard of excellence. After going 43-12, and setting the school record for wins, Sinclair advanced to the prestigious NJCAA Region 12 tournament, arguably the toughest region in the country, for the first time since 2002. The Tartan-Pride broke nearly every offensive and pitching record in a single season and took home the OCCAC Coach, Pitcher and Co-Player of the Year awards.
The programs breakout season began in 2005, when the Tartan-Pride went 38-14, tieing the school record for wins set in 2002. They lost in the finals of the District 12 tournament and had a player drafted in the 10th round of the major league baseball amateur draft, the highest draftee in OCCAC history. The 2004 squad slugged out a 28-22 mark, and in Goldschmidt’s first year as head coach at Sinclair in 2003, the Tartan-Pride enjoyed a 36-29 season under his leadership.
In addition to coaching the Blue Knights, Goldschmidt is also the director of baseball operations for the Dayton Hustle Select Baseball organization. He is also an associate scout for the New York Mets since 2004.
A native of Dayton, Ohio, Goldschmidt graduated from Chaminade-Julienne High School. He played college baseball at Volunteer State Community College in Gallatin, Tenn. and he graduated from the University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee with a degree in history in 1999.
Goldschmidt and his wife Jodi reside in Dayton, Ohio and have one son, Mitchell (2).
