Urbana Releases 2008 Schedule
Urbana, Ohio (Dec. 5, 2007)--- Urbana Universit head baseball coach Mike Goldschmidt announced the 2008 schedule for the Urbana University baseball team on Monday, December 1.
Urbana will begin the regular season with non-conference weekends in February with a three game set at Milligan College in Milligan, Tennessee and they will participate in the Tiger Classic at Georgetown, Kentucky with host Georgetown, Purdue-North Central and Seton Hill.
From March 3-8, the Blue Knights will take part in the Clearwater Baseball Invitational in Clearwater Beach, Florida. Urbana will play eight games during the week to set up Saturday’s Clearwater Baseball Invitational championship round. The Blue Knights possible opponents during the round robin event include: Trinity International University; Judson College; Northwestern College; Evangel College; Robert Morris College; Sienna Heights College; Hannibal-LaGrange College; and Grace College.
In addition to its first three weeks of the season, Urbana will travel to Fort Wayne, Indiana to take on Indiana Tech on March 15th and then to Marion College on March 16th before opening the American Mideast Conference play. The Blue Knights will also play Concordia University and Baldwin Wallace College in other non-conference action.
Urbana also travel to Fairborn, Ohio and take on Division I Horizon League power, Wright State University, on April 16th at Nischwitz Stadium.
"Our non-conference schedule allows us to play solid competition in warmer weather climates the first three weeks of the season, which should give us a chance to set our lineup and roles for players heading into AMC schedule," stated Goldschmidt. “We are looking forward to the opportunity of playing some very good baseball programs, especially the contest with Wright State University, but this type of schedule can only help us prepare for the tough AMC”.
The 28-game American Mideast Conference schedule begins with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 22 for the home opener against Notre Dame College. The Blue Knights will travel to Malone and Mount Vernon on March 28th and 29th. Walsh and Point Park come to town for the first weekend series in April, other AMc home and away series include Cedarville on April 11th and 12th, Rio Grande on April 16th and 23rd, Shawnee State on April 19th and the 20th. The doubleheader on the 20th will be played at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe, Ohio. The last AMC series of the season concludes with Ohio Dominican during the first weekend in May.
“The AMC is loaded again, Ohio Dominican is ranked in the pre-season NAIA Top 12, and two other schools, Walsh and Mount Vernon are receiving national votes as well. We will have to execute and play very sound, fundamentally strong baseball if we want to obtain our goals for the 2008 season”, said Goldschmidt.
Urbana finished 32-21 overall and 10-14 in American Mideast play in 2007.
