Two-Time OCCAC Coach of the Year Named Head of Urbana Baseball
Sinclair’s Mike Goldschmidt makes move to Blue Knights
URBANA, Ohio (August 1, 2007) – Urbana University Director of Athletics Doug Young appointed Mike Goldschmidt as the Blue Knights’ new head baseball coach today.
“Mike’s experience and successes on the field and in recruiting, especially in the local area, were paramount in selecting him as our next head baseball coach at Urbana,” said Young. “With his knowledge of baseball, his strong recruiting skills and his passionate approach Mike will lead our baseball program to achieve at a high level for a very long time.”
“When the job at Urbana became available I immediately thought I could be a good fit,” said Goldschmidt. “My personal goal has always been to coach at an NAIA or NCAA D-II university.
“Plus, the direction Urbana is going, and not only in athletics, but the overall structure and growth of the University, is an exciting prospect.”
Goldschmidt comes to Urbana from Sinclair Community College where he was a two-time Ohio Community College Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, in both 2006 and 2007.
During his five seasons Goldschmidt built Sinclair baseball into one of the best NJCAA programs in Ohio. He amassed 192 wins in his tenure and became the quickest coach to amass 100 wins in Sinclair school history. Goldschmidt’s squads won three conference championships and broke nearly every Tartan-Pride record. Six of his former players are currently in the professional ranks.
“I have a passion for the game of baseball and a competitive spirit,” said Goldschmidt. “My goal for the Blue Knights, every season, will be to win our conference.”
Sinclair is coming off a 44-15 record in 2007, a season in which it captured the Spring OCCAC Conference Championship and set a school record for wins in a single season. In 2006 Goldschmidt earned the first of his two OCCAC Coach of the Year honors and led his squad to a 43-12 record. In the fall of 2005 Goldschmidt led the Tartan-Pride to their first fall OCCAC Championship in school history. In 2004-2005 Goldschmidt guided the Tartan-Pride to a 38-14 overall record and a runner-up finish in the Region 12 Sub-Regional Tournament.
Goldschmidt got his start with Sinclair in 2000 as an assistant under former Head Coach Jim Harrison and in 2002 Goldschmidt was promoted to head coach.
Goldschmidt began his coaching career in 1995 as the Head Junior Varsity Baseball Coach at Chaminade-Julienne High School in Dayton, Ohio. Goldschmidt spent four years at CJ, before starting the Dayton Classics Baseball Organization. In 2000, Goldschmidt guided the Dayton Classics 16U team to a NABF National runner-up finish in Northville, Mich. In three seasons running the Dayton Classics, Goldschmidt’s teams posted a 116- 49 record and made three World Series appearances.
In addition to coaching the Blue Knights, Goldschmidt is also the director of baseball operations and head baseball coach for the Dayton Hustle Select Baseball organization. He is also an associate scout for the New York Mets of Major League Baseball.
A native of Dayton, Ohio, Goldschmidt graduated from Chaminade-Julienne High School. He played college baseball at Volunteer State Community College in Gallatin, Tenn. and he graduated from the University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee with a degree in history in 1999.
Goldschmidt and his wife Jodi reside in Dayton, Ohio and have one son, Mitchell (2).
“My biggest supporters have always been my wife and family,” said Goldschmidt. “I have been very fortunate to have talented student athletes who have done well advancing on to four year schools and I may be coaching against some of them this season by the looks of our schedule. All the players I have ever coached have helped me get to this position.
“Everyone at Sinclair has always been great to me,” he added. “I am very thankful to Doug (Young) and Urbana for affording me this opportunity. I am excited and look forward to the challenge of building on the success the team has experienced.”
