Blue Knights Shut Down Rio Grande
Urbana outscores Redmen 17-0 in AMC twin bill
URBANA, Ohio (April 16, 2008) – Urbana University pitchers, junior Jaeson Hudnall (pictured left) and sophomore Cody Lawhorn, tossed shutouts, while the Blue Knight offense was explosive in Urbana’s sweep of Rio Grande. Urbana (19-12, 9-4 AMC) won 9-0 and 8-0 in the American Mideast Conference twin bill Wednesday at Blue Knight Field.
Hudnall (6-1), who leads the AMC in strikeouts with 58, gave up just one hit and fanned eight in the opener against the Redmen (13-24. 1-15 AMC). Senior Mike Heck accounted for two-thirds of the Blue Knights’ runs, going 3-for-3 with a double and two runs scored, and driving in 4 RBI. Senior Tommy Bowlen racked up 3 RBI on a double in the third inning to give Urbana a 4-0 lead. The Blue Knights built on that with four more runs in the fourth. Heck produced his fourth RBI of the game in the fifth inning to give Urbana its 9-0 lead and eventual margin of victory.
Lawhorn (4-2) also held the Rio bats in check, giving up a mere three hits, while striking out three. The Blue Knights gave Lawhorn plenty of run support, launching four homeruns as a part of their nine-hit arsenal. Heck started the homerun derby with a bomb to left field in the second inning to give Urbana a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Kris Nealeigh got in on the action with a solo shot to the Grimes Center parking lot in the third inning.
Sophomore Matt Murphy lined a three-run homer over the left field wall in the fourth inning to extend Urbana’s lead to 5-0. Senior John Lindquist matched the feat in the fifth inning, crushing a ball to centerfield which caromed off the monster Winnebago, and gave the Blue Knights an 8-0 insurmountable lead.
The Blue Knights host Shawnee State this Saturday, April 19 at 1 p.m. in an AMC doubleheader.
