Urbana Takes One AMC Win from Yellow Jackets
Blue Knights fall in game one, come back with a vengeance in game two
CEDARVILLE, Ohio (April 12, 2008) – On a day filled with rain, snow, sleet, and 30 mph winds, the Blue Knight baseball squad split an American Mideast Conference doubleheader against Cedarville University (10-22, 4-12 AMC) at Yellow Jacket Field Saturday. Cedarville used a walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth to win game one, 3-2, but Urbana (16-12, 7-4 AMC) came back in game two with a vendetta, coasting to a 15-4 run-rule shellacking.
Blue Knight junior Jaeson Hudnall took the mound in game one and dominated the Yellow Jackets. Hudnall averaged more than two strikeouts an inning, fanning 15 batters in seven frames and only giving up two hits. Cedarville put up two runs in the first inning and owned a 2-1 lead heading into the seventh when Urbana’s John Lindquist tied the ball game with a solo homerun. The Blue Knights could have inflicted more damage, but left three base runners stranded. That would cost Urbana, as Cedarville’s designated hitter and first batter in the bottom of the ninth, Matt Houchin, hit a walk-off homerun to left field. Urbana had eight hits to Cedarville’s four.
In game two, the Yellow Jackets again took an early lead, going up 4-2 after the first inning. After that first inning, sophomore Cody Lawhorn shut down the Cedarville bats for three innings, striking out five, while junior Shane Pfouts came in relief for two innings, allowing just one hit and no runs. Meanwhile the Blue Knights stepped it up at the plate, giving Lawhorn (3-2) plenty of run support. Urbana used a nine-run fourth inning to distance itself and closed the deal with a run in the fifth and three more in the sixth for a mercy 15-4 win.
Seniors Jeff Hartwig and Lindquist were a two-man wrecking crew on the Cedarville pitching staff, combing for nine RBI. Hartwig was 3-for-4 with a homerun and five RBI, while Lindquist was 3-for-5 with four RBI, including a two-run triple.
Urbana plays the University of Dayton this Monday, April 14 at 7:30 p.m. in Xenia, Ohio at the Athletes in Action Stadium.
