Blue Knights Sweep Point Park
Urbana finishes 3-0 on the week
URBANA, Ohio (April 5, 2008) – The Urbana University baseball team fared extremely well in their official home opener Saturday at Blue Knight Field, sweeping their first American Mideast Conference series with 8-0 and 12-2 wins over visiting Point Park University. Urbana also defeated Walsh, 7-6, on Friday to go 3-0 on the week.
In game one, sophomore Cody Lawhorn (pictured left) (2-2) showed great command and allowed just three Pioneer hits in his first complete-game shutout this season. He struck out three in seven innings of work. The Blue Knight bats were definitely behind Lawhorn as well. Urbana pelted the Point Park pitching staff with 14 hits, led by sophomore Matt Murphy, who went 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Senior Jeff Hartwig had a big 3 RBI double in Urbana’s five-run second inning. The Blue Knights tacked on two more insurance runs in the fourth. The inning started off, not surprisingly, with another Murphy single up the middle. Junior Matt Netherly, who went 2-for-3, also singled, and senior Mike Heck doubled to plate both runs.
In game two, the Pioneers (1-17, 0-8 AMC) got on the board first with back-to-back hits in the first inning. The Blue Knights answered with two runs, capitalizing on two Point Park errors, Heck singled and had 2 RBI for the second time in the series. PPU tied it up with a run in the third, but Urbana took control and scored four runs in the fourth and six in the sixth to pick up the run-rule win. Urbana junior Shane Pfouts (2-2) settled down on the mound after the first inning and struck out three, earning the complete game win. Freshman Zach Roll led Urbana at the plate, going 3-for-4 with 3 RBI and a run scored. Seniors Mike Bezak and Heck, along with Netherly, had 2 RBI each.
Urbana (13-10, 6-3 AMC) is scheduled to play a single nine-inning game at Wright State University this Tuesday, April 8 at 6:30 p.m.
