Urbana Splits AMC Opener Against NDC
Junior hurler Hudnall throws three-hit shutout
ALEXANDRIA, Ky. (March 21, 2008) – The Blue Knights moved up their American Mideast Conference opener a day early and a state lower and ended up splitting with Notre Dame College Friday. The Falcons emerged victorious in game one, 5-1, while Urbana held on for a 1-0 win in the nightcap.
In an effort to beat Mother Nature, Urbana moved its “home” conference opener from Saturday to Friday and down to Northern Kentucky University’s Friendship Field. After arriving at 10:30 a.m. to prepare the field, junior Mike Blanton threw the first conference pitch for the Blue Knights at 2 p.m. Untimely errors by Urbana and a string of hits by the Falcons gave NDC the 5-1 advantage and Blanton (2-2) his second loss of the season. Shane Pfouts came in relief and struck out three for Urbana. Senior Jeff Hartwig blasted a solo homerun over the left field fence for the Blue Knights’ lone run.
The second game was all Jaeson Hudnall (4-1). The junior pitcher shut down the Notre Dame bats, allowing just three hits, striking out five, and picking off a runner. Senior catcher Tommy Bowlen did his part to help, throwing out two runners attempting to steal second base. Matt Murphy led Urbana at the plate, going 2-for-4, while senior Mike Heck had the game-winning hit to score sophomore Andrew Harrell.
Urbana will play Concordia University, Mich. this Wednesday, March 26 at 6 p.m. in a double header at Athletes in Action Stadium, located in Xenia, Ohio.
