Urbana University Announces 2007 Hall of Fame Inductees
Havens and Card Highlight 14th Class
URBANA, Ohio (Oct. 1, 2007) – Urbana University will induct three-sport standout Sarita (Brown) Havens and defensive football all-American Elgin Card into its Athletic Hall of Fame this Saturday, October 6 as part of the Blue Knight homecoming festivities.
First, Havens and Card will be recognized at Ellis Field prior to kickoff of the Urbana homecoming football game vs. Walsh at 2 p.m. Following the game there will be a reception in their honor at the Sara Landess Multi-Purpose Room in the Urbana student center. The induction ceremony is scheduled to begin tentatively at 5:30 p.m.
Havens will be the 29th member inducted into the Urbana University Athletic Hall of Fame. Havens, a native of Lorain, Ohio, attended Urbana University from 1989-92 and was a three-sport athlete. She was named the Mid-Ohio Conference Player of the Year as a sophomore, leading the Blue Knights to a dream season in 1989-90. The post player averaged 18.1 ppg and 8.8 rebounds per game and she shot a blazing 50.3 percent from the field. On the way to earning first team all-Mid-Ohio Conference honors, she led Urbana to a 23-7 record and the University’s first Mid-Ohio Conference championship, going a perfect 8-0 in league play. Urbana advanced to the NAIA District 22 playoffs, falling in the semifinals to eventual champion Central State. Havens was also named to the All-NAIA District 22 Team and was runner-up for District 22 Player of the Year honors during her sophomore season.
She overcame a knee injury her junior year and returned for a stellar senior season when she averaged 15.9 points and 8.5 rebounds, earning All-NAIA District 22 honors in 1991-92. Havens closed out her basketball career with 1,351 points, sixth-best all-time at Urbana. Her 718 career rebounds is third all-time. Her 526 points in 1989-90 is fifth best in Urbana single-season history. She was prolific at the free throw line, owning the Blue Knight records for career free throws made (298) and single season free throws made (115 in 1991-92). She also owns the record for free throws made in a game when she sank 14 against Tiffin in 1992.
Havens was named to the 1991 All-NAIA District 22 Women’s Track and Field Team after throwing the shot put 42-2 ½, a meet record effort. In addition, she played one year of volleyball for the Blue Knights and was named offensive player of the year.
In addition to her athletic accomplishments, Havens was involved in drama productions at Urbana, as well as the Black Awareness Organization. She was named homecoming queen her senior year.
Havens, who graduated from Urbana in 1993 with a bachelor of science degree in elementary education, recently moved to North Carolina where she teaches kindergarten. Prior to her move to North Carolina, she taught for 14 years in Lorain, Ohio. She was a member of the Adult Choir of Greater Victory Ministries, as well as a Sunday youth teacher and youth choir director. She has also coached basketball and volleyball at the high school, junior high and elementary levels.
She has three children: Felecity (11), London (5) and Skylar (2).
Card will be the 30 th member inducted into the Urbana University Athletic Hall of Fame. He was a four-year letterman and starter on the Blue Knight football team from 1988-89 and 1991-92. He was an Urbana University team captain and a three-time NAIA District 22 selection at safety.
Card closed out his career as one of the most prolific tacklers in Urbana history. His 71 solo tackles in 1989 during his sophomore year, broke a single season record. During that same season, Card had one of the best defensive games in school history, nabbing three interceptions vs. Campbellsville on Sept. 23, 1989 – a single-game mark that still stands. He was twice named the District 22 Defensive Player of the Week in his super sophomore season, and closed out the year by being named honorable mention All-District 22.
He was named a preseason All-American by College Football Preview Magazine going into the 1990 campaign. He returned in 1991 and was the Blue Knights’ second leading tackler (97), earning him All-District 22 accolades for the second time in his career. During his senior year, Card was named team captain and Urbana’s most valuable defensive back. He was the key component in the Blue Knights’ pass defense which ranked sixth in the nation. His efforts culminated in his third trip to the All-District 22 team and a selection as an all-American by the National Strength and Conditioning Association.
Card was always listed in the media guide as Urbana’s strongest defensive back. The 6’0, 180-pound Card could bench 335 pounds. At the finish of his career he had shattered the Blue Knights’ record for solo tackles with 187. Card also amassed 11 career interceptions.
He was a student assistant for the 1993 Blue Knight football squad, coaching the defensive backs. He was named homecoming king in 1992.
Card, who graduated from Urbana in 1993 with a bachelor of science degree in education/history, continued his teaching and coaching career at the high school level. He coached and taught at Miami Trace from 1995-2002, helping the football team to four playoff appearances and a regional championship. Card was an assistant head coach at Princeton High School from 2003 to 2005. He also taught there and was promoted to ninth grade principal. Card currently serves as the assistant principal at Lakota West High School, and also is an assistant coach for the Lakota West football team. He helped coach the team to a 2006 playoff appearance.
Card and his wife of 10 years, Holly, have three children Keely (13), Kennedee (8) and Jayse Anne (5), and reside in Liberty Township, Ohio.
