English as a Second Language Program
Study American culture, traditions, and customs while learning English at Urbana University
The English as a Second Language (ESL) immersion program at Urbana University offers courses in the areas of listening, speaking, reading, writing, and culture. Through excellence in teaching, individual attention, demanding coursework, and self-reflection, our program offers a unique learning experience to prepare degree-seeking students for college-level study or to learn the English language for personal growth. This program is open to anyone who has completed a secondary education or equivalent. ESL courses are offered for college credit which may be applied toward elective hours.
The program is designed for students whose native language is not English. The 16 week fall and spring semester courses (10 week semester in the summer) are taught on Urbana’s main campus and offer a full day of instruction in:
- Oral communication in English
- Grammar of English
- Composition in English
- Academic reading in English
- American culture
- Integrated skills
When ESL students successfully complete the program and meet all other Urbana University admissions requirements, they will be granted automatic admission to the University.
