Dr. Kirk E. Peterson was named 22nd President of Urbana University on February 13, 2014. He has served as Interim President since April 1, 2013.
Peterson arrived in Urbana in June 2010 as Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs/Dean of Faculty. In this capacity, Peterson was instrumental in the implementation of online delivery of academic courses and degree programs, demanding the highest degree of academic integrity.
Before coming to Urbana, Dr. Peterson was Associate Provost and Founding Dean in the School of Graduate studies at Chowan University in North Carolina. In his six years at Chowan, Peterson also held the titles of Founding Dean, School of Education, Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs and Associate Professor and Chair in the Department of Sports Studies and Physical Education. He has served as Associate Professor at Gardner-Webb University in North Carolina.
Raised in Illinois, Dr. Peterson earned three graduate degrees from the University of Tennessee - Knoxville (Ph.D.), (MSE – Mental Health Counseling), (MSE – Sport Psychology) and his bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse. His wife, Rachel, and their three sons have established strong roots in the Urbana Community. “Urbana has been a home-away-from-home for Rachel and me since we arrived here in 2010. There is no better place to raise a family, and we are blessed to have so many wonderful friends, colleagues and community leaders in our lives. We will plan to watch our sons grow into men in Champaign County and we couldn’t be prouder.”
