The Business and Economics
course offerings provide students with an opportunity to approach
systematically, on a collegiate level, both the study of American
business practices and the economic environment in which they
live and work. The offerings of the Division are planned to
achieve the following goals, arranged in order of importance:
1. Prepare Bachelor
of Science degree graduates for entry-level managerial positions.
2. Prepare Bachelor
of Science degree graduates to enter graduate levels of business
study.
3. Provide Associate
of Arts degree students the opportunity to pursue an emphasis
in Business.
4. Provide adult degree
offerings to those students who aspire to higher occupational
levels.
5. Provide electives
in business and economics for non-business majors, including
at least one course in general education.
The primary focus
in the business major is on nurturing the personal development
of the individual student. The purpose is not only to develop
an understanding of and an evaluation of the methods and practices
which are utilized in successful businesses, but to bring the
student to an increased awareness of the needs of other members
of an organization, and of the importance of ethical and moral
values in business decision making. Emphasis is on exploring
alternatives and understanding "why" rather than "how." In
this way, students are prepared to develop their own potential,
to adapt to change, and to make significant individual contributions
to the success of the total team effort.
Upon
graduation, successful students will have been exposed to a
breadth of awareness and a depth of understanding which prepares
them for responsible positions in the business environment.
This enables them to earn a livelihood and to participate in
the advancement of the community and society.
