Urbana UniversityCurriculum Plan – SAGE B.S. in Human Services Leadership
The B.S. in Human Services Leadership requires a blend of General Education courses and Human Services Leadership (HSV) courses. This Curriculum Plan is provided to prospective students so that they can begin to determine how completed courses might be applied to this degree. Upon receipt of your transcripts, your advisor will complete an official Degree Check Sheet for the B.S. in Human Services Leadership
Degree requirements can be met by courses completed at Urbana University as well as credit transferred from other colleges and universities. See the reverse for more information on transfer credit.
A minimum of 126 semester hours of credit is required. Of these hours, at least 60 must be from four-year institutions including Urbana University. Of the total hours, at least 30 must be from Urbana University. Your last 15 hours toward your degree must be earned from Urbana University. Note on HSV courses: To transfer in the equivalency, usually two courses from another institution are required.
Transfer Credit Information
Credits taken at institutions using quarter hours convert to semester hours at the rate of 2 to 3. For example, a 3-quarter hour course has the equivalent of 2 semester hours of credit.
Grade of “C” or better required for each course considered for transfer credit.
Maximum Technical Credit is 30 semester hours.
An official evaluation of transfer credit is completed upon an individual’s admission to Urbana University and during his/her first semester of attendance.
Urbana University Graduation Requirements
GPA: Graduation requirements include a minimum overall GPA of 2.00 and a minimum GPA in your major of 2.25.
Minimum Hours: A minimum of 126 semester hours is required for a bachelor’s degree. Some students may need to take more than 126 hours to meet all degree requirements.
Residency Requirement: Of the total 126 hours, at least 60 must be from 4 year schools including Urbana University. The minimum hours required from Urbana University is 30.
Honors: To graduate with honors, a student must complete at least 63 hours from Urbana University. Credit for life experience will not be counted toward this requirement.
Urbana University – Human Services Leadership Course Descriptions
HSV 300 Portfolio Development (3 hours) - This course teaches students to identify those areas in their backgrounds which may warrant college credit, to write a competency statement, and to identify and gather appropriate documentation in order to support the claim of college-level learning.
HSV 355 Organizational Psychology (4 hours) - Examines the prominent theories of organizational psychology and organizational behavior and change. The application of theory and principles of organizational psychology to administrative practice will be presented.
HSV 356 Advanced Human Development (4 hours) - A holistic examination of human developmental processes from birth through late life. Major theoretical perspectives related to life span growth and change are explored. Sociocultural, biological, and psychological issues associated with childhood and adolescence, young adult-hood, mid-life, and late life, are included.
HSV 357 Applied Social Theory (4 hours) - The dynamics of social interaction will be surveyed. Principles from social psychology and sociology will be examined. Influences upon the individual as a function of group membership will be emphasized. Also, working effectively in-groups and building effective interpersonal communication skills will be explored.
HSV 358 Contemporary Social Problems (4 hours) - A review of the current issues and problems in Western society. Relevant psychosocial theory providing insight into the etiology of social problems are included and proposed remedial approaches will be discussed. The role of social services programs in addressing these issues is explored.
HSV 455 Mental Health: Perspectives and Treatment Modalities (4 hours) - Clinical and counseling psychology perspectives will be explored. Emphasis will be placed on understanding and treating various psychological disorders. Also, counseling methods used to help an individual cope with common life events will be considered.
HSV 456 Research and Assessment Methods (4 hours) - Principles of conducting research in the social sciences will be examined. Also, psychological testing, clinical and counseling interviewing and behavioral observation techniques will be explored.
HSV 457 Human Services: Organization and Practice (4 hours) - The history of human services in the United States, as well as the current network of organizations and programs, is reviewed. Social psychological theory is applied to both macropractice perspectives, as well as micropractice issues. Ethical consideration in the delivery of human services will be included.
HSV 458 Deviance and Social Control (4 hours) - An examination of the current issues in social deviance, including social, psychological, historical, and cultural influences. The responses of major social institutions to deviance are reviewed, as well as programs designed to enhance prosocial behaviors of individuals and groups.
