RESIDENTIAL LIVING INFORMATION

The following information may be of some help to you as you plan your move from living at home to living in the residence halls. Additional information is available in the Urbana University Student Handbook (PDF file) which you will receive during check-in.

There are eight residence buildings on campus: East Hall, South Hall, Blackmer House, Hickory House, Losch House, Ross Hall, Hazard Hall and Sycamore Hall. East, South, Hazard and Sycamore Halls are traditional residence halls with semi-private rooms and community bath facilities while Blackmer, Hickory, Losch and Ross feature suite style living. For 2008-2009 all new first time, full time students will be housed in East, South, Hazard, or Sycamore Hall.

Urbana University requires all main campus students under 21 years of age, or who do not have senior status, who are not married, do not live their their parents or guardians who live within the established distance guidelines for commuters of 35 miles from campus, and who do not have a valid, documented and approved medical reason to the contrary are required to live on campus in a University residence hall and take a full board plan. Board in the residence halls consists of a nineteen (19) meal per week plan. Non-first year students are eligible for a fifteen (15) meal per week board plan. Brunch is serviced on Saturday and Sunday mornings. No meals will be served during vacation periods. Failure to provide accurate information on the Residence Hall Agreement, Housing Questonnaire or Residence Hall Application may result in disciplinary action. Students who provide false information about their residency status and/or students who would be required to live on campus but do not contract for housing will be charged for room and board.

Residence Hall Hours

Residence halls and suites are locked 24 hours a day. Students are issued an outside door key for their assigned hall which enables them to enter their building.

Cooking/Appliances

Students are permitted to have one microwave (not to exceed 12 amps) and one refrigerator (not to exceed 3.5 cubic feet) per room. No open element heating appliances, broilers, toaster ovens, electric skillets (including Foreman style grills) or hot plates are permitted.

Personal Property

Urbana University does not assume any responsibility for the loss of, or damage to, articles of personal property which occur in its buildings or on its grounds. Students are encouraged to carry appropriate insurance (either their own or through their parent’s or guardian’s homeowners insurance) to cover potential losses. Information about optional coverage plans available from a third party provider is included in new student housing packets.

Pets

With the exception of non-carnivorous fish (in a 10 gallon or less tank), animals or pets are not allowed in the residence halls or suites.

Air/Heat

Hazard Hall, Sycamore Hall and the suites have air conditioning. Each student is able to control the temperature in his/her room in these areas. Students in non-air conditioned residence halls should consider bringing a fan, not window unit air conditioners.

Cable

Cable is available in each room of the residence hall. Basic cable service is available through the university. Students with a cable ready TV or converter box will be able to access the regular service channels offered. At this time, premium channels are not available to residence hall rooms or suites.

Phones

Phone service to each room is provided by Urbana University. Each resident will also have a voice mail box. Individual phone numbers, information about the university voice mail system and information about long distance service will be available when students move on campus. During the 2003 - 2004 academic year, a new phone system was installed. Phones for this system are provided by the university in each residence hall and suite room. Phones from home will not work as this is a Voice over IP system.

Cars

Residential students are permitted to have cars on campus but can only park in their designated lot. The student must register the car with Campus Safety and display the appropriate parking permit. Car registration can be completed when you check into your residence hall. Failure to comply with university parking regulations will result in fines being issued.

Mail

Campus mailboxes for residential students are located in the Student Center. The front desk, in the Student Center, assigns mailboxes to students when they arrive on campus. The Mailroom, is located in Oak Hall, which is where packages that do not fit in the mailbox will be held for pick up. Your mailing address will be:

Urbana University Box # XXX
579 College Way
Urbana, Ohio 43078

Students must stop by the front desk in the Student Center to receive their mailbox number and key.

Laundry

Coin operated laundry facilities are provided in each residence hall and in the basement of Ross/Hickory for the suites. Change machines are located in the Hazard Hall and Sycamore Hall vending areas.

Health Services/Student Health Insurance

The university employs a Registered Nurse to provide basic health services to residential and commuter students. Generally, a nurse is available Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and can provide health education, over the counter medications as well as referrals to additional medical resources. The nurse’s office is located in Eaton Hall.

Health services are available to any residential or commuter student. All residential students and all student athletes who do not provide proof of insurance coverage to the university by August 31, 2007, are required to purchase group accident and health insurance from the university. A supplemental insurance policy for athletes is provided by the university. If you wish to decline purchase of the university insurance, you must send proof of insurance (a copy of the front and back of the insurance card with the student’s name and date of birth on it) to the Health Services Office no later than August 31, 2007. After August 31, 2007 it is not possible to decline the insurance for the 2007/2008 academic year. You may mail or fax your information to:

Health Services Office

If you change coverage or become ineligible for coverage under your parents’ or spouse’s insurance plan, you are responsible for notifying us of your change in status and must provide us with a copy of your new insurance card. Please be sure to understand your individual insurance coverage. Students are responsible for any co-pay and/or medical bills. Questions about insurance coverage may be directed to Health Services (937-484-1231).

Champaign Bank of Urbana provides ATM service on campus. The ATM machine is located in the Student Center. A small fee applies to transactions made on non-Champaign Bank accounts. Champaign Bank customers can enjoy fee free withdraws.
