The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974 is a federal statute that protects a student’s educational record. This Act was designed to protect the privacy of educational records, to establish the rights of students to inspect and review their educational records, and to provide for corrections to those records through hearings. Students have the right to file complaints with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Office concerning alleged failures by the institutions to comply with the Act. Copies of the complete policy may be found in the Registrar’s Office and questions concerning the policy may be directed to that office at 937-484-1353.
Under this law University personnel are generally prohibited from discussing specific information regarding a students’ educational record with anyone other than the student, including parents/guardians, without the written consent of the student. Therefore, it becomes important for you, the parent/guardian, to encourage your student to deal with situations personally.
